Cat recovering after passerby finds it shot, caged and tossed into McKay Bay

X-rays of Lovey the injured cat revealed she had been shot more than 30 times
with a pellet gun before being tossed in McKay Bay trapped inside a carrier.

Early Wednesday, a passer-by heard gurgling and pulled from McKay Bay an appalling discovery — a cat that had been shot with pellets, put in a carrier marked "Kitty Penitentiary" and tossed in the water.

The cat survived, thanks to the rescue and a trip a veterinarian's office. Now investigators from Hillsborough County Animal Services want the public to help bring the cat's abuser to justice.

"We take this very seriously because we know the Florida Veterinary Specialists at 607 Lumsden Professional Court in Brandon.

Doctors discovered the cat had been shot several times with what appeared to be BB pellets along the side of her body.

They had to shave her black fur off to remove them. She was in good condition, Ryan said.

"The caretakers call her Lovie because she is very affectionate despite the trauma she has been through," Ryan said.

I'll confess I sometimes daydream about having the time and the financial resources to track those kind of people down and put an end to their twisted, miserable lives in the most painful manner possible.

What next - avenging the killings of cows and pigs?

What happened was cruel. It was unnecessary. It should be punishable if the perp is discovered.

But in the end, it is just an animal we are talking about. And from the animal's perspective, it is not much different from a deer that gets its leg nearly gnawed off by a pack of dogs...that is left to bed down in the woods...to wait in pain...to recover or to die.

Life is sometimes cruel. We should not make it more so. But when I read (as I have many times) about animal torturers getting more severe punishment than murderers...all kinds of red flags pop up.

From the animal's perspective, it is very different. A deer is not a domestic animal - as are most of these animal abuse victims - and, in any case, a deer does not look at dogs as companions, masters, or fellow pack members. A deer does not expect gentle or decent treatment from a pack of dogs. A dog or cat does not just automatically forget, and disassociate itself from, all of its past interactions with humans, as it's being tormented by one or more of them.

More than that, it's not the perspective of the animal that concerns me, but the perspective of the human (and I use that term very, very loosely) involved. Do you see no difference between a deer brought down and maimed by a pack of dogs, and a cat shot and drowned, or a dog beaten half to death and set on fire?

Yes, I do speak hyperbolically when I suggest, as I did, that I'd like to hunt all animal abusers down and put them out of the world's misery. Not all of them deserve to be executed, certainly. The female who put a girl's kitten in the oven and then turned on the heat, awhile back - oh, you'd better believe that I would pull a switch or a trigger on that one, without even a second thought.

They really deserve worse punishment than the murderers of people. An animal that gets attacked by an animal is a victim of some horrible circumstances. Animal torturers perform their activities for their own pleasure.

I totally agree!! Good for you!!!They should have the same thing done to them they've done to the animals: starving, neglecting, tying to a tree somewhere, tying up period, etc., etc., breaks my heart. Just makes me kiss and hug my babies more and they are looking at me if to say, "Mom, what IS it? What's come over you?" (my babies here, be darned if I didn't somehow put 2 of them and can't remove one, geez)

I agree with you there, animals (domesticated at least) are helpless and trusting. But so are children. I think that anybody who neglects/harms/starves/kills EITHER children or domesticated animals should pay.

What big, beautiful Tuxedos! My big Tuxedo cat has been giving me the cold shoulder lately, since I adopted little Patrick, but he's starting to come around.

Thank you! the male, Fletcher, is a "mommy's boy" big time, got him as a baby. The girl, Felicia, we got later when she was 1, he was 2, now he's 7, she's 6. SHE is a daddy's girl big time and in fact acts like I have cooties except when it's time to eat. They are very smart and respond to commands (in the house!, stay, no, ,etc.). Never had had such smart kitties.
