bad,
Do you know if it would work?
No, sir. What kind of files are you talking about? Pics or sound?
Well, I would prolly start with sound.
I think, under the circumstances, with all the legal issues about it, you might want to have Lance run that past his LLP owners of this forum.

I hope the new moderators will be as vigilant as Lance was in keeping the "living areas" of the forum decent and the rest to the cellar. My concern is that since the only moderators are ones who frequently use profanity, they won't label us as whiners when we express our concern about improper stuff upstairs as was the case at Newsmax. Imo, some of what's up here oughta be down there if we're going to attract a full spectrum of ideologies and have a healthy balance of input here.

Buzz: The goal is to keep the "questionable" stuff in the inferno where it belongs. The rest of the forum we (and by that I mean all the moderators) are trying to keep relatively clean.
We do not want visitors wandering into a thread in GD with the wrong topics. If you go to the Inferno, you have been warned that its "almost anything goes" area. You get what you browse.
This board does support attachments. I can turn it on and see how this experiement goes if you guys are up for that.

I just surfed a segment of the general board of the forum and came up with only a half dozen statements I'd personally consider objectionable, so I guess I shouldn't complain, and please don't construe any of my comments to include the inferno. I am fully aware that just about anything goes down there (to a point) as it should be so as to enjoy the priviledge of uncensored dialogue.
Suggestion: Have an ongoing thread in the inferno for moderators to transfer hellish posts from good threads upstairs so as to keep the good thread where they should be. One poster should not have the power to send good threads to hell by trashing it up. Where this were done a link could be left in the good thread for any who wanted to go to the inferno and read the objectionable post. By this, the post would not be fully censored.

Yukon learned a long time ago how to screw up a thread. A policy which doesn't deal with that is doomed in perpetuity. The very least rule any board should have is a "no disruption" rule. It's a very effective policy item and one that has a wide range of use/disuse by management.

[Here is a heavily edited version of a slight semblance of my conversation with Lance. Keep in mind that though I used Yukon as my example (for obvious reasons...You're welcome, Yukon), he is by no means the only troll that we'll ever have the 'opportunity' to 'train'.]
<snip Lance's private message per fair usage policy ;D>
Ahhh...the 'slippery slope'... ::)
I intended to address it in that thread but I've just been slammed at work this weekend. I don't think it's a good idea, and here's why:
Make no mistake, at this point, Yukon is here for one reason, and one reason only... to force us into a position of censoring him or banning him, just so he can gloat about it. If I'm wrong in this belief, he has yet to demonstrate otherwise.
Look at his MO. He first came in starting threads that he knew would incite people to hurl insults at him. When he realized that all we would do in such cases was to move those threads to the Inferno and unleash the horde on him, he changed tactics. Now he's going into otherwise productive threads and dropping paper bags filled with dogshit, just to see who'll stomp on them, or to force us to move those threads as well. He knows this leaves us with three options: the two that you've suggested [deleting single posts or moving them to a 'dump thread'], and ignoring his 'dogshit baggies' completely in those productive threads and going on with our conversations (the latter of which he feels that we are most certainly incapable of doing).
The way I see it, the scenarios play out like this...
1)He dumps on a good thread, we delete his post. He starts screaming about censorship. We all know that we have every 'right' to do it, but that's not what we're about here. He knows that deleting his posts is effectively 'banning him without actually banning him', and he'll make a helluva noise about it.
2)He dumps on a thread, we move his post to a 'dump thread' in Hell that ends up making absolutely no sense whatsoever. See above. We might as well cave in to giving him his own forum.
In either case, he wins by forcing us to do that which we are loathe to do; and those who love to see people 'punished' on BBs for their misbehavior win the smug satisfaction of knowing that we really have 'banished' someone so that they don't have to hear what they don't like to hear from that person, thereby using us to facilitate their victory by force rather than exerting the effort of stubborn resolve. And WE are left holding the bags of dogshit. We and the other members are the ONLY ones who lose.
I think we should do nothing but ignore him in those productive threads, unless he is actually contributing something worthwhile. (In spite of our irritation with his antics, we all know that he is quite capable of it.) No one is forcing anyone to respond to his drivel-posts, but until we STOP resonding, he will feed on it. Personally, I think if everybody would just shut the hell up about him, we'd force him to either change or move on. [No doubt that even this conversation is 'arousing' to him.]
What does it hurt us to have him drop into a thread and make one or two posts of irrelevant or inane bullshit, so long as it doesn't turn into a flame-fest? If it does, we'll move the whole thread. And if it does turn into a flame-fest, who is to blame but those who keep stoking the fire?
In my mind, we are setting the example of how a good BB should be run. Everyone here is free to speak their minds. I'll be damned if I'll let him (or anyone who might feel that he should be censored) fuck that up and force us to become like NewsMax (or worse...EZ). If that means people have to deal with some occasional unpleasantness from him, so be it. The sooner they learn to ignore him, the sooner the problem will resolve itself. It may require that those who cannot tolerate him must leave us until he gives up. As much as I would hate for that to happen, NO ONE'S 'feelings' should EVER cause us to soften our principles for their benefit.
Just my .02 ;)
[End response]
------------------------------------------------------------------------
And a couple more random thoughts:
The concept of 'Do Not Feed The Trolls' is the stuff of Internet Legend. But it seldom works, because let's face it, they're fun to play with...sometimes. We've made it even simpler here, by adding a 'petting zoo'. If you really must feed the trolls (or play 'fetch the stick'), there's a place to do it. Trolls are like dogs. If you're sitting in the living room having a civilized discussion with your friends, and the dog comes in and aggravates the shit out of you, do you just feed him in the living room?? Hell no. You IGNORE HIM until you're ready to feed him...on the porch. If he doesn't like it and he shits on the living room floor, you drag him out on the back porch and beat the daylights out of him. Hell, if he was smart enough, he could join the conversation, and we wouldn't have this problem. But dogs will be dogs, and until they learn to speak, we're left with having to be content with teaching them not to shit on the rug. (Or shooting them in the head, but they don't play 'fetch the stick' too well after that... ::))
About that 'civilized conversation in the living room... Like I said, everyone is free to speak their minds here, and I do understand that conversations tend to drift, but WHY is it that nobody has a problem keeping conversations about football in the Sports Forum, yet damn near everyone (yes, I'm guilty at times) seems to have a problem keeping conversations about fornication with farm animals in the Inferno? I mean, I say 'damn' and 'hell' and 'dogshit' all over the place, and a little entendre here and there is all right, but...well, hell, y'all are grownups, y'all figure it out. (Anyway, I'll check myself, if you will too. ;))
And speaking of 'grownups', if your twelve year old is mature enough to understand the 'language of adults in the real world', more power to you. There are some things here that they should read. If there aren't, we need to take a break from making dirty jokes and post some. (Or maybe I just need to get out of the Inferno and walk around more often... :-[) But if they're not mature enough to handle it, and you're not going to restrict them from coming here (or otherwise supervise their surfing), rest assured that they'll pass us by on their way to Hustler.com.
[/soapbox]
Oh yeah, and let me throw a big red lit-upAMEN on this:

I agree with Sky on this one. If we start trying to clean up any troll's act for him, we will become what we do not desire to be. (Newsmax or worse, EZ)
For the time being, the policy will stay the same as it is. Threads that go past a certain point will be moved to the Inferno. We are NOT going to delete bad posts or cut & paste them into a war thread in the Inferno.
Posts will be edited if copyright violations are found. We have to do this as responsible administrators of this forum in order to avoid any legal responsibilities in these issues.
In the future..
This board will be upgrading to YABBSE 1.51 shortly. How shortly, I can not tell you guys just yet. The new version is currently in open public beta, so my guess is that we have a few more weeks of testing.
There is a mod that someone has written to allow the ignore list in the PMs to function as an ignore list on the forum. What that means is that if you do not want to see any posts by that user..you will not. I plan on installing this feature as part of the upgrade process.
So for those that just can not stand certain posters..have patience, a solution will be forthcoming soon!
In the meantime, I would encourage us all to try and behave nicely outside of the Inferno. Our goal is to make NoPC a good place for all. The Inferno is provided for those times and places where we want or need to flame away. PLEASE KEEP IT THERE!
Yukon doesn't get under my skin. He is a non-entity. He is irrelevant. Apparently he is bothering a few of ya'll more than is warranted. I thought I had trained you better than this. Obviously I have failed in my duties. I apologize.
I volunteer for Yukon's personal baby sitter on this forum and will take full responsibility for his behavior. I will need some temporary super powers to diminish his presence. It is obvious what he is attempting to do and the only reason he is succeeding is because you are letting him.
He needs to be put on a shorter tether apparently. Once again, he doesn't bother me, but he is apparently bothering some. How ironic would it be badnews deleting offensive posts? ;D

I do not think any posts have been deleted or any userid banned. The only one that has been banned in recent memory was one of the bartcop trolls for a really legit reason. Beyond that, the last banning goes back to before I was the admin.
Just to clarify, the only job a mod does here is:
1. Help promote the forums. The global mods are just that; all forums. Their primary responsibility is to make sure Inferno-bait winds up there. Forum mods (right now, badnews is the only one) have the power to move threads out of their respective forum or edit them as #2 below states. Their primary job is to help promote their specific board and monitor it for problems.
2. Fix posting problems; and by this it is meant bad links, over-size images, and copyright violations.
3. If a thread gets vulgar or a flame-fest, transfer it to the Inferno.
And that is just about it. The only one that has any power to "ban" as user is the guardian id. No one else.
Here's the solution:
Give me authority to ban Yukon with the express disapproval and instructions of the Administrator of this board and all the other Moderators that I NOT do so. I will, of course, say "Fuck you," speak to Yukon about it and if he doesn't show a little bit of improvement in his obvious extreme offensiveness to some of you, I will flagrantly disobey your instructions and fix the fucking problem myself. That way, the board remains intact and I will hold the burden and responsibility.
I do not think any posts have been deleted or any userid banned.
<clearing throat> I deleted a post of Yukon's the other day in the food forum...just to see if it worked. It did. ;D

I've never said that I want to 'silence him'. If fact, I've argued against it. The whole purpose of our refusal to silence trollish behavior by deleting of posts and banishment is to avoid become just another BB constrained to some particular ideology, and ruled from the top down. It's left to each individual to respond as they will, and to every other individual to react accordingly.

I'm not suggesting banning. As hard as I tried to get banned at NM, it was simply beyond my skills. I gave up. A beaten and broken man.
You are aware of my tolerance level of obscenity and vulgarity...much to Buzz's chagrin. It seems like there are a bunch 'o people that are being offended here, myself excluded by the shennanigans. One thing that did pique my attention was what Brandon said in another thread that there are people who are reading this stuff at work and they are being monitored at their places of employment via the links that pop up on their computers.
I'm not an opponent for fairness, but I think placing someone in job jeopardy because someone is playing the local idiot savant is perhaps a little out of line.

Tile, Yukon's not really such a big deal. I just thought that while we had a shining example, we ought to talk about how we, as a society, should deal with trollish behavior. We don't have a set policy for it, for a reason, but I do think it's good for us to come to a general concensus about it among ourselves.

It was a mean-spirited post (and you know that's just not my style), so I exercised my right to SELF-censorship and deleted it. Since no one had responded, the thread went away.

When you were trying to catch my post-count, you started threads about everything...hand lotion, breast milk, etc. I was making fun of it by starting threads about motor oil, fire, piss... ;D ::)

I KNOW, I thought it was all in good fun kind of joke. I didn't take it as MEAN. And besides, the breastmilk thing is interesting to me, AND it bugs Wendy, and I really DO have dry skin. LD

Great. Yukon stays. Anyone that doesn't have the balls to deal with it leaves.
Welcome, Yukon! ;D
<cracking knuckles>
I agree. Every forum oughta have one or two............that is so long as they don't move in their whole gang/colony, er whatever. Tha inferno'd be maxed out n tha moderators all in tha loony bin over dealin with them. :o ;)

avoid[/i] become just another BB constrained to some particular ideology, and ruled from the top down. It's left to each individual to respond as they will, and to every other individual to react accordingly.
Very cool! 8)

Are you comfortable with that? Putting it another way, shouldn't the general forum, gererally speaking, not contain stuff you would not want your own 12 year old reading?
Are there any 12 year olds here?
Nobody knows. Heck, there might be 6 year old readers here. Some here have children who are likely intelligent enough to, if so inclined, read these forums. Not too likely, but there are a lotta folks out there who simply have higher standars of morals and it'd be nice to entice a few more of them here, imo, as many of them have a lot of wisdom and knowledge to share.

So you're sayin we all must respect the rules and desires of the Guardian, but you, BN?? Isn't that an abuse of your power as moderator?? Are you in charge here, or is Lance??

No, buzz, I'm not saying anything at all. I was reacting to a flurry of threads that were getting out of hand. Yukon this, Yukon that, yada yada yada.
I was suggesting if there was a need for a hatchet man, I was volunteering to keep others' hands clean...much like Mr. Pilate. I've got no truck with Yukon, other than he is a cowardly rat fuck who ran away from a war.
Everyone knows who is in charge, buzz. Quit asking ignirint questions.

Who let's a six year old surf the internet unsupervised? There are a lot of places inappropriate for six year olds, a lot more so than here. None the less, this is one of the places inappropriate for a six year old. It is not the job of he board moderators to look out for other people's kids in this matter.

Not an ignirint question, imo. I thought the Guardsman was the only bonafide hatchet man here. If you assume upon yourself the authority to hatchet Yukon today, who ya gonna assume the authority to hatchet tomorrow ifn you get as ticked as I've seen you get in the past at NM? :o

Somewhere on this thread Sky said "Thank God."
So I thought I would say "You are welcome." Since I am the resident "god."

Buzz, buzz, buzz...The Guardian does NOT ax people. Have you not been paying attention? No one has ever received the old up your wazoo here yet. I don't assume anything, buzz. I was volunteering for a covert operation. Since the posting of that volunteer, it has been made quite clear to me by the vast majority of the members here that Yukon stays. At the time I posted it, I was under the impression that Yukon was on other people's backs. It wasn't so. I formally retract my volunteer for the job. Are you assuaged yet? Geezo!! ::)
You ain't never seen me "ticked," Bub. This is a BB. I consider it as such.
Really...honestly...most sincerely, I don't give a shit whether Yukon stays here. I've made it quite clear. My conscience is clear. I want Yukon to stay...especially now so that you will have to read his fucking filthy language. ;D Yes!! Especially now!!

BN, I'm fully aware that neither you or Lance have no intentions of axing Yukon. I just expressed my irritation of your arrogant attitude. And btw, I 'm not ignorant. I've read you long enough to know when you're really ticked, and that hasn't been very often, but there have been times.
I've got no quarrel with you and the others as moderators............so long as y'all respect Lance's guidelines and your statement, imo, went beyond that. That's all I'm sayin. Sorry, but if you can't handle that, I can't help it. Don't run off sore. If you wanta give stuff, learn to take it.

I'll try to change. I know I've been a very bad boy. Please forgive me.

Your point is well taken Jeny. I gotta agree. You're riight. The buck stops with the parents, and this isn't the place for them.

No problem, sir. I'm in the process of "purifying" the Food Forum. Don't want anyone to be offended, you know.
