Molly (the Bernard) went into labor last night and started having trouble. By 3am, with one stillborn pup, for her troubles, we had her loaded and ready to head to Wichita for an emergency C-section. I guess she decided to try harder at that point - and whelped a live tiny girl, named "Nana", followed by another stillborn, and then another live girl and one squiggly boy.

Three wee ones.

Nana is in the middle here, the other two have not been named yet - but I held each of them and the two little girls were so cuddly and snuggly - but the little boy, was a wiggler. He squirmed and turned and made tiny muted grunting noises, already his little body seems muscled and strong.

For 8 weeks these are "Tiger's toys" and then they shall all go to their 'forever homes' and I shall cry a bit - but I'll be happy for them.

The other two still don't have names. If it were up to me - I would name them - but they are really my daughter's dogs and she is in communication with the folks who have spoken for them and so far - they are nameless.

But Nana is my favorite - she has "angel kisses", little white spots on the tips of her ears. And her markings are the best - I'm told.

And no worries, Nornec, their daddy is here. His name is Barnaby (yes, spelled that way).

My daughter is having trouble with one of the buyers - a gal that wants the little boy shipped at 5 weeks. It's her husband's birthday. My daughter will not ship that young. She said (8 weeks) or find a different puppy. The lady will not win, my kid is stubborn. I stay out of it.

On the happy side - another of our "adoptees" found his "forever home" yesterday. Wolfie - a three-year old Husky/Dob mutt-mix. He only spent a week with us - but he was a joy- previously having spent his entire life on a 4-foot chain - Wolfie was intoxicated by the ability to run and run and run. He couldn't figure out how to jump up on the deck right away.

Our Humane Society has totally quit taking in dogs - so it's up to the rest of us to take care of - and place these critters. I'll get a pic of Wolfie today.

How do you justify breeding 7 biological children with so many hungry homeless children in the world already?

Seriously, I am kind of 'iffy' about breeding more animals, too. This is my daughter's business - I just scoop the poop and cuddle the babies. :)

The sad, but true, thing is that most dogs that are dumped and end up in shelters - are not purebreds - they are mutts.

I love mutts, they can be the best dogs, healthier than purebreds often - but they are "easy come - easy go" for many thoughtless people.

Usually though, when someone forks over several hundred dollars for a pup - they take better care of it. Not always, but usually.

All our (regular) animals are fixed, only my daughter's Bernards are not. But, these pups were spoken for before they were born - although one may go to a different home, not sure yet. They are not in the same boat as the pups the old farmer puts in the pillowcase and throws in the creek. They are no better than those poor, unfortunate ones, but for some reason - there is a segment that wants them.

We have placed dozens of dogs and cats that were not ours, and my daughter does all of it - and she interviews every person who wants one - and many are turned down. And she does it free of charge, although sometimes an "adopter" will give her some money for dog food - or send her some blankets, or something.

She's good with animals. And you may not believe this - I probably wouldn't if you told me, but when she and I go somewhere (almost every time) a stray animal shows up. Out of the blue. I swear she has some sort of animal magnetism. I rarely see strays when she is not around. But then the hunt is on - we must track and follow - lure and comfort, and finally, get the animal and go door to door - or bring it out here and notify the authorities so they can send the owners over. I gave up fighting it. It is just a fact of life. :)

I'm sure he gets State Aid for each and every one of the little bastards. Some people do that for a living...capturing the dregs of society and charging the Government to "raise" them.

Well its been a full week without my best friend. I think I cry every day for a couple hours. My husband says maybe we better get a dog or two to keep me out of trouble and to have something to love and dote on. We are thinking of 2 puppies.

Chihuahuas have an average life span of 20 years...plus the tenacious little bastards have more heart than body. Best dogs on the planet. They especially love women. They were bred to be protectors of Incan princeses and if anyone gets too close to their human, they'll bite their ankles off when they attack. :)

DNA Study Finds Chihuahuas Aren't Dogs

As part of an ambitious effort to identify genes that cause disease in dogs and humans, scientists at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle analyzed DNA collected from 414 dogs representing 85 breeds, including some of the most popular. The findings have sent reverberations though the ranks of dog fanciers, who primp and preen their beloved companions for shows and take great pride in their pedigrees.

"It was a surprise to find that some breeds such as the Ibizan hound and the Pharaoh hound, along with several others that dog aficionados have long believed dated back thousands of years, are actually much more modern animals – re-creations that were probably produced by breeders," said geneticist Leonid Kruglyak, who helped conduct the research. "However, it was more of a surprise to find that some breeds are not even dogs."

Among other findings, the analysis determined that the Chihuahua is actually a type of large rodent, selectively bred for centuries to resemble a canine.

"This is clearly going to raise some eyebrows in the Chihuahua world," said Peggy Wilson, president of the Chihuahua Club of America. "It goes against our belief system. People are pretty passionate about their dogs. There is going to be disbelief."

Using 96 distinct patterns in the genes called "microsatellites," the researchers compared dogs within breeds, and breeds with one another. In the May 21 issue of the journal Science, the team concluded that almost every breed was surprisingly distinct genetically. They were able to identify each dog's breed by its genes with 99 percent accuracy. They also found that breeds could be clearly grouped into four distinct clusters based on striking genetic similarities: ancient dogs, hunters, herders, and guard dogs.

"Once we had these groups pretty well mapped out, the canine mimics were easy to pick out," added Kruglyak. "And actually, it was kind of intuitive in hindsight."

The study found that several diminutive breeds had been independently created around the world from a variety of other animals, including the Lhasa apso (Tibetan snow rabbit), Pekingese (Chinese water rat), Shih Tzu (stoat), and Yorkshire Terrier (pigeon).

"Most of these do contain some actual dog genes," admitted Kruglyak, "but the percentage is no higher than ten percent in each case."

Officials at the American Kennel Club and the AKC Canine Health Foundation praised the work in spite of the controversial findings, saying it will help breeders, veterinarians and scientists eliminate dog diseases.

"This really is revolutionary in terms of increasing the number of tools available to breeders," the AKC's Patti Strand said. "It really will have a tremendous effect on improving the health of dogs. However, it does require us to rethink our mission and reevaluate whether it is appropriate to continue numbering breeds such as Chihuahuas and Yorkies with the real dogs."

The potential ramifications of these findings are significant as condominiums and rentals around the nation which prohibit exotic animals anxiously await news as to whether scientists will be officially reclassifying these breeds as other animals.

Well its been a really shitty couple weeks with out my dog. I dont think I have cried this much in my whole life. Anyway, we started talking to people about adopting a new baby dog. We have spoke to 5 places and so far I only like one of the places. We put a non-refundable deposit on a new dog tonight with the one we like. We wont get one until December but this is what it will look like, this is from a prior litter with the parents. It is a Shi-Poo. A shitzu poodle mix. I am not sure I can get another poodle without thinking of Emily and comparing it. So far we have 2 names picked out. Abby and Tinkerbell. Husband is not a big fan of the Tinkerbell name. Anyway....I am going to be a mom again and I am looking forward to it. :)

I just gotta post an update.

Three weeks, guys. These little rascals are growing like bad weeds.

Here they are.

This is Nana - she is the smallest - but thinks she is ferocious. She has this tiny growl. She is actually worth the most - a smooth coat, likely. Potential buyer from New York. If I don't hide her and keep her for myself first.

;)

Ok next, this is Serena. She is way too loving for her own good. Wants to cuddle all the time. No buyer yet - one gal wants to trade her for a horse.

No frickin way. I told my kid no more horses until better facilities are in place. You can put Serena on her back easily and she just lays there. But she likes to play too, tries to hope around but her head is so big for her little body she ends up falling most of the time.

Tiger

And last, but never least, is Andre - he is as sweet as they come. A big big boy with great markings and confirmation - will be a rough coat.

All the pups have full masks and angel kisses on their ears. White paws and white tails. The are simply perfect.

Now - I have to figure out how to sneak them and hide them away when my kid is not paying attention. I 've hdden a couple under the covers already - but danged if she doesn't ferret them out.

Sweet Andre. He's gonna be a big'un.
