View Full Version : Regarding the use of members' real names

Satan
07-25-2004, 11:03 AM
I find it absolutely RIDICULOUS that I even have to SAY this, much less make it a 'rule'. ::)

BUT...

There will henceforth be a new RULE enforced:

Thou shalt NOT use the familiar (given) name of any other poster when posting messages on this board (unless their username is their given name). Ever. Period.

Some of us know each other quite well. Privately, I'd give most of you my full name, home address and phone number if you asked. But there are always 'Guests' about, and there are some who've visited us that I don't even want knowing my first name.

If you want everyone to call you by your real name, change your 'displayed name' to reflect it, and we will. But unless someone else has done that, we must assume that their reason for NOT doing so is quite simple: THEY DON'T WANT STRANGERS TO KNOW IT.

Amnesty (for prior actions) is granted to everyone who has previously engaged in this practice, just so I don't have to hear all about 'who started what', 'who does it more', etc. It doesn't matter. Water under the bridge, and all that.

But from now on, the first offense will be punishable by a two-week suspension of posting priviledges; and the second offense by permanent banishment. A word to the wise (and two weeks off. if necessary) should be sufficient.

Sky ... your comment makes me wonder.

Are there a lot of lurkers/guests and what harm can they do?

I'm sincere in my question, and how much info can be gleaned by first names anyway?

since posting IM's is against the rules, and using someone's real name is against the rules, you could get a newbie in a lot of trouble by sending them an IM to please just call you by your real name on the boards..

Oh, sure. And while you're at it, it's fine to post their email address, their age, their telephone number, their social security number and their middle name. Just not the first name. :o

There are almost always at least one or two around. I know who some of them are by their IP addresses (sometimes they're just us not wanting to be disturbed in our reading), but not always.

I'm sincere in my question, and how much info can be gleaned by first names anyway?

Just from knowing a first name? Not much, probably. But there are lots of 'puzzle-pieces' scattered about for those who are curious. For instance, I've probably already dropped enough info between NewsMax and here for you to call my office on Monday morning. You just wouldn't know who to ask for. ;)

Lets be sensible about this, please.

Posting private information is NOT allowed. If someone wants you to use their name, fine. (In fact, my other userid IS my name...Lance) I personally do not care.

However, some people do care and are immensely private. And these offenses are in the eye of the beholder, not the person posting the information.

Best practice would be to assume the displayed name of the poster is what the poster wishes to be known by. If that displayed name is their real name...so be it. If it is not, then it should be pretty obvious what the member desires.

He said it after it had already been established that actions were going to be taken to put a stop to the use of real names without permission.

It wasn't that he had the "power" to convince admins to take action just on his behalf. It was that they had already stated their thinking on the matter in discussion with each other.

You are accusing Sky, Wendy and The Guardian of having no backbone to make their own decisions. They are not merely pandering to one member. This was discussed, and they had their own concerns about it, before it ever became an issue on the open board.

And what exactly prompted that move?

It wasn't that he had the "power" to convince admins to take action just on his behalf. It was that they had already stated their thinking on the matter in discussion with each other.

Well how about them sharing some of their reasoning, seeing how no one has come up with any justification for what can only be called, by NoPC standards, a draconian mearsure?

You are accusing Sky, Wendy and The Guardian of having no backbone to make their own decisions.

I haven't done that...yet. :)

They are not merely pandering to one member. This was discussed, and they had their own concerns about it, before it ever became an issue on the open board.

Oh, I admit to coming on after having tossed back a beer or two(even three or four!)

I still plead innocent to using any one's name, even, maybe especially then.

At times like those I have enough trouble remembering my OWN name, much less any of yours! ;D

How hard can it be to understand why it isn't acceptable to use someone's real name without their permission?

How many times do you think someone should be warned?

Nope. You don't get it. It has to be laboriously explained in great detail the harm that could possibly be done in a million and one different circumstances of what could possibly happen by tossing out personal information around a public forum.

It's already been said several times that there is an "unless their username is their real name" clause.

The rule doesn't say anything about permission. What's more, Sky made it plain that a person could be banned for doing it without regard to the other person's consent.

I'll answer that after somebody answers my questions above.

I'm more than certain that at this VERY moment, Lance, Sky & Wendy are in a top level meeting behind closed doors formulating a detailed explanation to you as to why they conduct this board the way they conduct this board.

The rule is there to protect privacy. It's just a reminder that respecting privacy of others is an ultimate priority around here. We can sit here all day and think of exceptions and/or ways the admins could potentially abuse the rule.

Sometimes people register with their real names and then change them. Or they register on one board with their real names and use another name here. It's hard then for people to remember which name to call them.

We can think of any number of scenarios in which people might "innocently" break the rule. But we don't have rules to nail the innocent. If someone gets banned because of this rule, and it seems unfair, everyone is perfectly free to bitch and moan...or go somewhere else.

1.) Do not post personal information about other members without their express permission.

2.) I've you've been told to cease using a members given name on the forum, do so immediately.

This isn't neurosurgery, people. ::)
