I am in a bit of a quirky mood tonight, so pardon my offenses but I think a lovely idea would be to have a recipe thread or even ideas for a nationwide campaign to rid ourselves of unfriendly and/or deadly species which can be quite tasty when cooked to perfection..
My top nominees are:
alligator
croc
rattlesnake and other poisonous snakes of regional interest
cayote,
and last but not least...
rat (we can export these to China and help the trade deficit, if we find eating then somewhat incompatible to American sensibilities)
bon appetite....:)
ants. Find away to hunt these little pests out of existence and I'll kiss your feet one million times.

simple.
"ant clusters"--tender little bites with ginger and soy sauce...great with beer....
same for grasshoppers--the Japanese love these little treats....although, I have always thought grasshoppers have lovely faces....adorable eyes...

Just stay away from the 'fish cookies'. If it looks like a sugar cookie, smell of it first. Trust me on this. :P

You mean one could get banned for talking food?
Only on Martha Stewart's forum, I would think...Suth and I would be banned for mentioning crisco and bacon fat.....

Well, that proves that ONE of the three of us has some sense, doesn't it? ::)
Make that two. I'm outta here. Goodnight. ;)

Grasshoppers...or locusts anyway, are pretty good , I think. Roasted they're kind of sweet. Kind of like a rice crispy.
But even though I like soggy rice crispies, I doubt I'd try a raw one.... :-X

I think "virgin" coupled with "I am a llama (as many of you know, I LOVE LLAMAS) is rather adorable.
"Junior member" reaks to me of boardrooms and managerial whatnot....

Smoked Cayote...
once side of Cayote--preferably breast meat
one bottle of red wine
4 garlic cloves
a healthy dose of rosemary
a healthy dose of olive oil
a big splash of red wine vinegar
a bog helping of worsterchire (sp) sauce
one slice of bacon cut in little pieces (you can cook the bacon in the microwave ahead of time if you want to reduce the fat)....
one bay leaf....
marinade cayote in the above mixture for a couple of hours at least.
Preheat oven to 425.
Stick cayote with all that marinade into a La Creuset type roaster (heavy cast iron) or a watered clay roaster (you know, the one with the Russian name--Romatoff or whatever)......
Add baby carrots, celery broken up in pieces, a few cut potatoes, and a hank of parsley into pan....
Bake for one hour. Add another half bottle of red wine.
Drink the other half bottle of wine while cooking
Bake until tender.
Serve.
Yellow or wild rice is a nice side.
Peas or broccoli or squash cassarole (sp)

(this being the generic "you")....
And cayote is such a palatable meat

We can eat em-but we really don't want to totally wipe them out. It would have some baaaad effects. Especially gators in Louisiana. You think the Nutria problem is bad now-wait until you remove the only thing that eats em in the wild.

Nah-life is better with ants. Imagine all the other dead things that would just stay there without em. Remove em from the house - sure..but we need em!

Interesting topic Lucy. But it illustrates that what is food to one is not to another.
And of course, cultural mores and traditions must be taken into account.
For example, we have a friend who is an immigrant from China (he came here 5 years ago). When we first met him, his English still wasn't great and he was having legal troubles because of a divorce. So he was invited quite often to our home for visits and meals so that he could practice his English, we could try to decipher and explain his legal documents to him and just to hang out (he introduced us to Mah Jongg - great fun).
Anyway, once we were walking down the street and a dog went past. He said something about dogs being good eating (but explained when asked that cats weren't so good to eat). Most westerners would be horrified at the thought of eating a dog (or cat) as much as I would think Hindus would be appalled at the thought of eating beef.
All of the things mentioned in this thread were eaten (or still being eaten) by peoples around the world. I'm sure that some even like eating possums, gaters, snakes, cockroaches, etc (as weird as it sounds). :)

The topic was meant in fun....:)
Actually, I almost went to a famous dog restaurant in Beijing once, but I chckened out so to speak and had roast duck that night instead....
poor duck.

Oh, I know it's fun, lucy, just adding my own thoughts (I'm such a killjoy sometimes). ;D
So, have you ever had another opportunity to try dog?
ilovelucy

You are not a killjoy, love:)
No, not unless you care to include the wild dog is seems to be stalking my beautiful pyranees pup at the moment--I would have him on my Forman's grill in a heartbeat if he dares try to attack my beloved Sophie.

Convenient and ours is a countertop size.
After I get around to using it, I will give a report.

What exactly is wrong with the disc(s)?
They are herniated. (Disc T7 and T8.)
Which is causing them to hit my spinal chord.
I love pain!
ilovelucy
01-23-2003, 03:39 PM
If they are still in place and simply swollen and inflamed, the aloe and barley green might help....
Also, try not eating meat or tomatoes or any other acidic food....yogurt might be nice or rice pudding and green veggies and such....think "soothing"----also potassium (ie bananas)....
It has been a while since I did research on this, but check out Dr. Julian Whitaker before you allow a surgeon near you with a scalpal.......
Take care....
