I am suspicious of CHICKEN FRIED STEAK in general, because if it were a decent cut of meat, one could eat it rare (like I do), but.....

what kind of meat do you use when you cook it?

Hmmph. Yankees. ::)

And it ain't 'chicken-fried', it's country-fried (here in the Old South, anyway)

Son, you ain't lived 'til you had country-fried steak and gravy* at my Mama's house. Corn (on the cob), some lima beans or butterbeans, maybe some mashed potatoes (throw that instant shit in the trash can, it ain't that hard to boil potatoes), a slice or three of fresh tomato, some biscuits and a big glass of sweet (but not too sweet) tea. Good God, y'all, let's eat. ;D

*A note on 'gravy' for our Yankee friends:
The gravy is to put on your biscuits, y'all, not on your steak. And it's the brown stuff, stop looking around for something white. :P

In Oklahoma, they called it "chicken-fried," and they put white gravy on it. You never would have found such nonsense at my Mama's table. Here, it's "country-fried," the gravy is brown, and it goes on the biscuits.
Or the mashed potatoes if there are any.

The hot sauce is for the beans.

Sky...did your mama make biscuits and tomato gravy for breakfast? This was my favorite breakfast ever.

You gotta quit creeping me out like this. I swear to God, I don't remember having a sister, but your Mama has got to be my Mama.

In my hometown, the only place where you can get chicken fried steak is at Dakota Style Chicken [don't ask.] The damn meat tastes like it just came out of the box that was hidden in the back of the freezer for the last six months. The "creme gravy" looks and tastes like it's better suited for schoolboy paste. >:(

The best chicken fried steak that I've tasted was served at the HL Green at Commerce and Ervay streets in downtown Dallas. I used to eat it for breakfast every Saturday morning when I lived in Dallas. I got it with two eggs, grits buscuits and, yes, creme gravy, just it's supposed to be.

Chicken fried steak is usually ground sirloin or ground veal that is battered, breaded and deep fried, somewhat like southern fried chicken [hence the name.] anything different is just hamburger.

Are you people nuts? The only thing you should do to a steak is warm up the outside on the grill. Sheesh. Ruining a perfectly good cut of meat.

Surely she hasn't always been a vegetarian, Wendy. Growing up in Mississippi? With a Mama that cooked country-fried steak? That'd be blasphemous.

I'll bet she became a vegetarian as a way to rebel against the family. God knows, they would have had a collective stroke had she converted to the RCC. ;D

Can't say I've ever had it..........seen it on menus but it never appealed to me.
Usually if I go to the trouble of going into a resturant, I get a normal steak or seafood. At home it's bbq or nuked, no pans or dishes to deal with.
When I was married, it was usually Mexican or bbq. And most of the women I've dated had various ethnocentric dishes that didn't include that one either.
I somehow doubt Dennies' would be that great, and it's the only place I can remember actually seeing it on the menu..... :P

(Tomato gravy?...........eeeyuck!)

T-man, Claim Jumper has chicken fried steak there. It's might descrumptious, too. They use the white gravy howsomever, and it's still purty dang good. Small portions, though...you know how they are there....what? About a 15 pound plate full? :o

Sorry sodaK old friend, but REAL TEXAS style chicken fried steak is tenderized round steak, sunk in a mixture of egg and milk, then rolled in flour, fried, NOT submerged, just fried in an iron skillet, in HOT greese. Hot greese, or the batter will come off. White creme gravey poured on top. Fried taters, bisquets and mcroney and cheese. Shit, I'm hongrey!!!!! ;D ;D ;D ;D

So I guess it's the white gravy that makes it 'chicken-fried' instead of 'country-fried'...

No offense y'all, but that shit is nasty. :P

White gravy can be divine but only when you use yesterday's bacon grease.....otherwise, it can be rather paltry....

Chicken-fried steak is Texas thing best served with smashed taters (with the skins on) and cream gravy (I don't know what that white crap is that y'all are talking about. ::) ;)), and fried okra and/or fried corn-on-the-cob.

The gravy is made with either grease from frying the steaks or bacon grease, milk and/or cream, and tons of salt and pepper...like sausage gravy without the sausage.
