Guess not. :)
I did 20 minutes of Tae Bo this morning, and I think it kicks ass. Very fast paced, very aerobic, fun, easy to keep up with...not to mention it tones the muscles needed for ass kicking.

I used to do it. I need the 'over the hill' version now. 20 minutes with Billy and you'd all be reading my obituary. It is an excellent workout though. A friend and I used to get together and do it. In fact now that I think about it she still has my tapes. :)

They say (in the promo on the back of the tape) that it burns 800 calories an hour and is one of the most aerobic workouts you can do.

His new workout comes with 5 DVD's or it's also in VHS format. Plus you get some light weight workout balls. My doctor keeps harping on me to do some exercise and lose weight for my health. This one might kill me though. Maybe I'll just get on my treadmill and pretend I've worked out with Billy. :)

Walking is great exercise. I wish I had a treadmill.
Have you seen those Walk Away the Pounds videos? I keep looking at those and wondering why somebody made a video for that. How much can there be to say? Get off your ass and move your feet. End of tape. ;D

Oh they show you the correct posture for walking. Like how your feet should hit the ground. Heel first rolling to your toe and shoulders back... stomach tucked in. Also how to move your arms for a more effective cardio workout. By the time you figure out the posture you're out of the mood. I used to walk 5 miles a day and was in the best shape ever. Somewhere along the way I injured my back (not from walking) and couldn't get out and walk. I never got back into it and now 15 years later I'm a slug. :-\

I have a friend who has arthritis and heart disease. She has long been way overweight. Two years ago, she had trouble walking from her car to her office. I thought she needed to retire because she was so disabled. I thought that there was no way in hell she was physically capable of getting in shape.
Then one day she decided that she would just walk a quarter of a mile a day...then she got up to half a mile...little by little, she worked her way up to three miles a day. She also gradually changed her diet. She's lost eighty pounds, and she's cut out more than half the medications she was taking. She's a whole new person.
It can be done.

Yes indeed it can be done. It's the starting that is the pits. I miss those days of feeling energetic and not packing around the extra weight. My doctor has been on my case for the past 6 months because I have High BP and now my Triglycerides are high as well. Not to mention I am in menopause. According to the doc I am a heart attack waiting to happen. I agree with him and actually started doing something about it last week. I could kill for some chocolate right about now. When I have the urge to eat I go get a glass of water. It's nice to hear about your friends success story. Very motivating.... thanks for sharing her story.

I'm trying to diet. I have trouble with wanting to snack too. So instead of telling myself I couldn't snack, I decided to fill my fridge with raw veggies. If I snack it has to be a piece of celery or cucumber. That seems to be working. I'm not going around feeling hungry and deprived.

I don't feel deprived because I am getting enough to eat.... I just feel the chocolate calling my name. I generally eat some every day but have gone now for 5 days without any. I've also cut out the soft drinks as they are basically empty calories. I have never been a diet soda drinker. I hate taking medications and try to take the lowest possible dose. I'd love to get off of them altogether but according to my doctor it's not likely. It would be nice to prove him wrong. :)

The best ways to control blood pressure, as it turns out, are the same answers you get for every other physical ailment: proper diet and moderate exercise.

Tae Bo is not bad. After a few months it'll be too easy though, if you stick to it. Try really hard to hold your posture and position exactly like he says and like he does, use ankle or wrist (or both) weights once it gets too easy.
Lex likes to do Tae Bo with me. ;D

I can't help it. After 12 years of competitive gymnastics, I always have to try to find a way to make exercise harder. I am very strong so routines (like tae bo) that partially depend on muscle fatigue as part of the work out rarely work for me.

Yeah...it's fun. Actually, I get bored easily with doing the same workout all the time, so I'll probably switch up between this and dance aerobics or step aerobics or whatever else strikes me. The important thing is just to do something.
And in other news...the sun just came out. I'm going to go for a walk while I have a chance.

Today is yoga day. Realizing that I had loaned out my mats, I almost eschewed the idea. But then I talked myself out of excuses and dragged a big rug out to cover the tile floor.
My plan is aerobics every other day and stretching every other day. I'm counting on someone here asking me how I'm doing often enough that I'll be too embarrassed to go astray.

Yoga was a bust. The tape I was planning to use turned out to be "power yoga," and I couldn't keep up. So I turned it off and stuck in a pilates tape. I have now officially challenged my belly, butt and thighs.

I think Tae-Bo is pretty good as an exercise - but why not just take some martial arts classes? That way - you would be doing some self-defense also.
The only safety concern I have heard - is that if you punch or kick without control - you can hyper-extend your elbow and knee joints. That happens in karate also - if there is no target to hit - if you're just practicing in the mirror - and it can hurt if you do it enough.
But, kicking like that really helps the butt.
And it probably is really good for Jen - but you gotta remember - she is used to extensive muscle training and impact on her joints that her muscles had to be strong enough and flexible enough to sustain. And at one time - maybe still - I am sure she could do the splits and have another team mate pick-up her leg for 6 or 8 inch over-splits. Gymnasts are some of the best athletes in the world - I don't give a shit what any man says.
I think you will like Tae-Bo. Let us know if you get the tape.

Are you allowing yourself days for recovery or are you exercising 7 days a week? The potential for injury is higher when you push too hard. I had been being a lazy slug till you started this thread and now I've been walking on the treadmill. ;D

I prefer walking to any other exercise. But I am older than you by about 15 years I think. My joints can't handle the high impact exercises at this point so I am easing into things. I don't want to kill myself off.... I just want to get in shape.
What kind of compulsiveness do you have? Where you can't miss a day of exercise? Need to feel that endorphine high every day? I used to be a compulsive exerciser until I injured my neck riding my bike and ended up in physical therapy for almost a year. Sometimes more of a good things ends up not being such a good thing. From my experience at any rate. :)

I don't think it's the endorphins. It's just mildly addictive personality issues. No big deal.
If I'm going to be addicted to something, though, I figure it might as well be something healthy.

I have a friend like that and she makes her husband crazy. She exercises every day and has nearly a meltdown if something upsets her routine. To me it seems more obsessive than addictive but then again maybe they overlap somewhat. What do I know.... I've become a slug in my middle years. ;D

I have several tapes, and I alternate them depending on what kind of workout I want. Some are very gentle, and some are much more demanding.
Yoga is one of the best things you can do for your body. It's very good for building strength and flexibility. But it's also for relaxation, focus, balance, and all sorts of good things. It is highly recommended for people with joint problems. It strengthens the muscles in ways that protect the joints, and it loosens the joints themselves.
If you've never tried it before, you do have to be careful about not overdoing it. You can hurt yourself by forcing a stretch you aren't ready for. For beginners, it's best to get a tape that uses props, like blocks and straps, to help modify the poses.

I'm still at it. I'm missing a day here and there a little more often than I was at first, but I'm still getting in about five days a week. I've discovered why I like to exercise every day if I'm going to do it at all. It's HARD to do it after missing a day. Everything gets stiff, and I have to put a lot more effort into it.
My little nephew was here last week, and he had so much fun giving me instructions on Tae Bo. "Hold those arms higher." "Don't flop that foot." "I know 90 year old men who can kick higher than that."
He was really barking out the orders. Nothing could have entertained him more.
At one point he said, "If you don't hear your bones popping, you aren't doing it properly. That's what's supposed to happen when you're old and you exercise."
Thanks, buddy. :P
Glad to hear you're still at it. Way to go. :)

Way to go. :)
I would have been dying laughing listening to him. How old is he?
My g'daughter Logan Marie decided the other day that she wanted to walk on the treadmill so I turned it on for her. She said it was too slow so I upped the speed. She looked at me and in all seriousness said, "Mam Maw, watch and learn". ;D

Ha!
He's eight. He informed me that I was to do Tae Bo twice a day from now on and that he'd better be able to see some muscle by the next time he comes to visit. :D
Kids. I wonder if I had that much confidence when I was that age.

Logan is four and she has enough confidence to believe she can do anything she sets her little mind to. She is taking summer gymnastics and comes here and shows me all the things she's learned. She informed me yesterday that I need a balance beam so she can practice.

Our little Hailey just started gymnastics last week. She is almost four. She said, "But Mama, I don't think I should go. I don't know how to do gymnastics."
I think she had a blast once she got there, though. She'll be teaching all of us in no time.

Just checking to see how the exercise program is going.
I'm up to 50 minutes on the treadmill. Amazing when I first started I thought I was going to die after 10 minutes. I'm adding a minute every few days till I work up to an hour. (Doctors recommendation)

Well, I haven't quit. :)
I had some problems with my joints and got skittish of the Tae Bo. But I have been walking and stretching.
Good for you on the treadmill. I've used mine twice now, which is not so bad since I just got it yesterday.
I'm going to move a TV into the room with it to make the time pass faster, though. I wanted the treadmill so that I wouldn't have an excuse not to walk when it was raining, but I still much prefer to walk outdoors.

I listen to music while I walk on mine. I prefer walking outdoors as well but I live up the mountain. Not flat, and if I go up I have to come down which is hard on my knees... if I go down I have to come back up which is just plain too hard on my old body. I could drive to town and walk down there but it just seems easier to get on the treadmill and look out the window at the scenery and listen to music.
What kind of treadmill did you get? Mine is a Health Rider with all kinds of programs and buttons I haven't even used. At this point I just get on it and walk. I tried a couple of the programs and was nearly unable to get out of bed the next day. :P

It's a Pro Form. I don't really know what all it does. I just get on it and walk.

Keep at it girls. When I started walking 5 or 6 years ago i had weight to lose and i thought i would die on some walks.. honestly.. all that kept me going was the fact that I walked around a country block and I had to keep walking to get back home..
Within a year I was doing 8 miles on weekends when I had time..

I used to walk 5 miles a day 6 days a week until I injured my neck in a biking accident about 10 years ago. I couldn't get out and walk and never did get back into it full swing. Now I have weight to lose (doctors orders-no excuses he says) and need to get my Triglycerides down into normal range. I'm up to almost 2 miles on the treadmill 6 days a week. I do feel better and I sleep a lot better. Thanks for the encouragement Pony. :)

Okay Suth it's been a month since you got the treadmill. Still using it? And how's the exercise going? I'm still walking on mine but not as religiously as I should be. I had a few problems with a medication I was taking and it affected my joints and muscles. I've since had it changed and seem to be doing better.

I did thirty minutes on the treadmill this morning. I plan to go to the park to walk this evening, or if it rains do another 45 minutes or so on the treadmill.
I'm also planning to do some yoga today. But I'm also planning to mop the floor, and that hasn't happened yet. We'll see.
I hear ya on the meds. I find myself starting over lots of times after I've built up to something I feel proud of. It's frustrating, but the important thing is just to keep trying.
