i remmeber .. i had a goldfish bowl.. and i was cleaning it.. (zoe and moli were about 1 and 3) but the phone rang.. I left the tank on the counter.. when i came back they had both dumped their grape juice in for the fishies to drink. ;D
If you trust your girls not to overfeed or mess with the temp, get Angel FIsh, they are beautiful, a bit fragile. Stay with the fresh, saltwater is a PITA, although gorgeous.
We had fish tanks in almost every room of the house when I was growing up. My Uncle owned a pet store. I wasn't much into the fish, but my brother was big time.
I could answer questions if you had some specific ones, but I can't really think of any "in general" advice.

hot water and a clean scrub brush and elbow grease. Don't use any cleaning agents. Might as well fill it all the way up and make sure it doesn;t leak first.

I do not know enough to keep them alive. :D
I know that the initial investment is the easiest part.
I know that within 24 hours - one fish will have died - infecting the rest of the fish, who will die at an accelerated pace after that.
I know that even though you think all goldfish look alike - that the ones you bring home to replace the first dead ones - will be noticed by your youngest who will cry and carry-on as though they had been life-long friends.
I know that fish poopy does not disappear - leaving a crystal-clean tank on its own.
I know that if your youngest drinks from the tank - that you will be up with her all night as she shoots from both ends.
But, that's all I know about them. :)

How old was she when this event happened? Young kids seem to have about zero survival instinct for what they put in their mouths. And then of course there are those backyard funerals when one of the little pets expires. My kids would not believe that a flush down the WC constituted' burial at sea'.
