I don't think this has anything in particular to do with religion. At least on the surface it sounds similar to a bit of pyschowacko psuedo-science called swadlling therapy or some such like that anyway. The idea being to wrap a rebellious (or having trouble relating to others) child in a very resistaining manner. The fruitless attempts to break free which naturally occur from that type of restraint are supposed to break the spirit of rebellion in the child. There have been several other cases of death from these activities.

Having been through an apotion proceeding recently I can state with some knowledge that the placement agencies are stretched very thin and the probability for abusive parents to go undetected is pretty high. My wife and I seemed an ideal placement so the agencies went about their business and left the kid in foster care with us for months without checking up on him. When it came time for the adoption proceedings to commence the judge delayed them because of lack of documented visitation. We could have been mistreating the kid undetected for many months. It had, in fact, happened to a small degree in one of his former foster placements. The boy is very lucky that we are truly nice people, love him as we do our own and only want what is best for him. Had we been assholes we'd have been able to get away with it no problem.

When my wife's parents died she and her brothers were placed with a pederast and his wife, Nurse Ratchet. They were both well-respected school teachers. They were both assholes. The system didn't know it because the kids were too scared to talk. This shit happens all of the time and the assholes are generally members in good standing with some church or another, in my wife's case Pentecostals if I recall. The religion doesn't make them assholes nor does it prevent them from acting on their asshole impulses.

If their church did indeed teach the use of extreme discipline then it would be about their religion. I also know that not all Christians are like this, thankfully.

Since those assholes were the church leaders it seems to be a bunch of abusers getting together under the guise of religion. Once again to blame religion for this is stupid. These are people who have a propensity for this sort of abuse and they organize into a sick little cult. There's no religion about it. They are no different than the idiots who sacrifice animals to pagan gods or demons or whatever. They do it because they enjoy it not because they really expect favors from deities that probably don't even exist. I've said it time and again. Religion is most often used to justify evil behavior. It is how people attempt to live with the fact that their behavior is deviant. Something in them tugs at their conscience and tells them it is wrong so they concoct a justification from God or Allah or Satan for doing it and that makes it right. If they can convince a few others then they can be sure that they aren't just sick and twisted and perverse and evil. The whole KKK is based on that approach.

Not all animal sacrifice is a bad thing. In Santeria or Vodou the sacrifice is no different than slaughtering an animal for food. The main difference is that part of the animal is place on an altar for the Lwa to consume, and the rest is cooked for the participants in the ceremony. Actually the immortal spirits are the intercessory beings that the Good God created to guide humanity. The Good God is too far removed from caring about the physical, but the Lwa are there in between what is purely spiritual and what is almost purely physical to interceed. It's really not that different from Chrisitianty with God and the Angels.
