What's good to keep them off? Neighbors have horses and consequently the flies are a bugger in the summer for them, being outside all the time. I tried the orange smelling stuff and it only works for a few hours.
Poor things look like they're in Zimbawai or something......

Shoot the horses.
Horse carcass = more flies ;D
Shoot the neighbours, release the horses with the corpses strapped to their backs ;D

That's an even better idea.

Yeah no shit........These are the neighbors that practice some South American pagan religion where the women dress in white and sarifice chickens, roll their heads around, and get all weak kneed.........honest to God!
They got really upset when they saw me and a neighbor watching them through the fence once........REALLY UPSET!
I had caught one of the males (there's close to a dozen of them at times) in the back yard, racked the shotgun and learned they can fly over 6' fences.. ;D

Sounds like a typical Cali neighborhood to me. ;D

They are not after the horses.. they are after the shit and water.. and sun..
scoop the shit and suggest to your neighbour that they keep the shit to a minimum as well..
Cut the weeds.. SHORT.. keep them short.. and go to a feed store..(if cali possesses something like that ::)) and ask them for a powder that will keep flies off cows and ask them if it's safe for dogs.. dogs lick themsleves.. cows don't.. The stuff we used to use was a white powder..

Also.. make sure you don't leave food out.. excess.. the flies will lay eggs in it and the dogs will ingest the eggs.. not good at all.. and change the water often.. Don't let the dogs eat fly eggs..

That sounds like sevin dust. It's not dog friendly.

Call your vet and get some spray for the dogs.
Call animal control and tell them the horses are suffering from the flies being bred on the dead carcasses of the sacrificed chickens.
Call the ACLU and tell them the neighbors Catholic rituals in the back yard are violating your right of separation of church and neighbor.
Call the police and tell them you're going to shoot the next UFO as he goes over your fence.
If that doesn't work buy badnews a bag to burn their house down.

Cannot recall anymore what it was called.. but once again.. cows do not lick themselves.. bath the dogs Larry.. it will help discourage the flies..

As in my neighborhood does more than watch......my dogs would do more than complain if it looked like bath day. They wouldn't bite me ....hard anyway.... but they'd scratch up a storm I'm sure.
I like them a lot......I don't love them......and I do what I need to to make sure they have a good life.... get attention...etc.........But I'm not going to hurt myself.... ;D

Neighbours next door have two rotties.. they are inseparable..
The babysitter took the older one for a drive to her farm.. the younger one is out in the kennel crying the saddest cry ever.. :( :(

My dogs have never been apart since Saggy was born....I think the only thing either would notice is all the extra food though... ;D (well that and not having to take turns to get their heads scratched and bury their faces in the crook of my arm before eating)

It's not a Pagan religion, it's an Afro Caribbean religion. I know several Santerians, if you go over and let them know you have a problem with the flies they'll most likely try to find a solution to the problem.

They try......it's not like filthy over there or anything. The older one's are friendly.....the younger one's aren't worth the powder to blow them to hell though..

Sorry to hear that. I've never met a Santerian I didn't like, which is really odd considering no religious or spiritual group can boast of being asshat free.

Have you tried some sugar-water traps?
We used to hang them up in the barn and corral - worked good

:D.........."to protect the flies from heat stress".........sounds similar to what I spent $5 a piece for though...... ::)
Get rid of the dogs and raise pigs - out fly your neighbor. ;)

LOL You're right! I asked my husband about that later, he said I was confusing them with humming bird feeders. ;D
I guess they put rotted stuff in the fly traps.
But doesn't my way sound better?? :)

Your way would make great ant traps.

Of the two types I've tried, plastic bag with a yellow pop up vs the hard plastic "jar" with a screw on lid.......the plastic bag kicked ass and the jars do nothing....every now and then a fly will fall in one of the holes and drown.
The plastic bags are full with about a quart of flys when I chuck them... :P
Sterling Rescue Fly Trap.........work great
Home Cheapo also has the zappers that cover 1/2 acre for $20.....don't seem to act like a bug magnet exactly, but fun to listen to them get zapped....... ;D
