View Full Version : NoPC YABBSE Upgrade to Version 1.5

YABBSE (this board) version 1.5 has been released. I plan on upgrading this board as soon as I can get a test forum and database set up.
The plan is roughly as follows:
1. Mirror NoPC's current database to a new test database.
2. Load the current release (1.5) level software.
3. Perform iterative upgrades on the database until we get to version 1.5. NoPC is currently running on version 1.1, this will require upgrades to 1.3, 1.41, and 1.5.
4. Limited unit testing by myself and selected test users.
5. Open the test board to all NoPC users for a short period of time, probably to not exceed a week.
6. If no problems are encountered with version 1.5, a specific time period will be blocked off and announced for the upgrade. During this time, NoPC will be unavailable to all users. At that time, NoPC will be upgraded from version 1.1 to 1.5.
If there are any comments or suggestions, please either IM me or post them here.
Thank you for your cooperation!

Status on upgrade:
I am currently waiting on a bugfix release from YABBSE, they are due to release a 1.51 version with the cumlative bugfixes that have been issued since the release of 1.5. This should happen either late this week or early next. Once it does, I can proceed with the install and we will begin the testing phase.
Once that starts and if no problems are encountered, NoPC will probably migrate to this version in the middle to later part of January 2003.

Okay..here is the latest on the "upgrade".
First of all, YABBSE Version 1.5 has been pulled from release. Some people encountered a significant number of problems, others did not. It is undergoing more testing and bug cleaning, with an anticipated release as Version 1.51 with the bugs swatted.
Bottom line is that our upgrade is probably pushed back a couple of weeks at least and will depend entirely on the availability AND reliability of version 1.51.
I will keep you all posted on this. I do not want to start our upgrade cycle until 1.51 gets released and is deemed by the YABBSE community at large to be reliable. While NoPC is NOT huge by the standards of some boards using this software, I do not want to create problems where there currently are very few.

Finally some "news".! 8)
YABBSE (this board) 1.51 went to official public Beta today. Due to the problems with the last version (1.5), the development team went to a tiered release schedule in which they do a closed Beta, then an open Beta, and at the conclusion of that, the software is officially in release status.
What all that techie double-speak means is that we are closer to the point in time to this board being upgraded. I would estimate we are still a couple of weeks away from it, but I will start getting the test environment ready.

Believe it or not, YABBSE 1.51 Final is now out. Which means I need to get in gear and get a test board up. Whats even better, is that there is a "supermod'ed" version, which contains a huge percentage of the custom mods that are available for this board. (I have registered on their testboard--its sweet.)
I will probably begin work on the test board within the next 2 or 3 weeks, school schedule depending.
Anyhow, I wanted to post an update and let everyone know that this is FINALLY coming to pass.

I should NOT do this..but am going to.
I just got through configuring a test board for another client that will use 1.51 with the Supermod patch in it. Its a sweet sweet system and there are a TON of improvements over what we have on this version of the board.
Given that I now know it still works on this server, the upgrade here should proceed that much quicker.
If I can get clear of the main projects this weekend, I will try and have a test board up for us to use within the next two weeks. HOPEFULLY!

YaBB SE 1.5.1 rocks... I just downloaded it and put it on my webserver.. click here for it (http://www.glomar.net/yabbse/index.php). Every part of it rocks. ;) It requires very little time to put up and I heard the upgrades were quite easy to do...

Giancarlo: Agreed completely. Did you get the premodded "Supermod" version? (Look in the Completed mods forum on the YABBSE support board.)
This makes a sweet sweet thing even better.
We'll find out about the upgrades. This board is 1.1, the current is 1.51. What that means is that I have to apply the incremental DB updates all the way forward..THEN upgrade the code. Which is why it is taking so long here. Plus 1.51 just went to full release about a week ago.

Not sure if I got the supermod version.. I don't think I did.. nonetheless it still is hot stuff. ;)
You aren't making a mistake upgrading.. the 1.5.1 version is excellent. ;)

Giancarlo: The only reason we have not upgraded yet is that I was waiting on the YABB team to declare 1.51 released. It has been in Beta test for a very long time. However, it does appear to be a very stable product now.
All: I have taken a copy of the database configuration as of this evening. It will contain the boards and member configurations AS OF RIGHT NOW. It will be empty as far as posts go, so you all can post to your hearts content once I bring the test system up.
What will happen is this:
I will replicate NoPC "as is" on the test database. Once that is complete, I will test it a little bit to ensure the existing 1.1 board still is working. Once that is done, a series of upgrade scripts will be run to mod the database structure.
Then 1.51 Supermod will be installed. Once that is done, we will perform further testing within a select group of users to verify that the board works. You know who you are---and I thank you all for volunteering!
Assuming we get past these hurdles, the test URL will be released to the community for a period of about two weeks in order to extensively test the new boards and features. Posts made on this new board WILL NOT be copied back to NoPC when the testing is completed!!
If all is okay to this stage, then a schedule outage will be planned for NoPC to perform the upgrade on the production database.
With any luck, by May we will be running on the new system with oodles of new toys.
