How bad do you think it is to share make up? My kids are always into mine.. There are three of us using each others make up on a regular basis.
Is make up a germ breeder?

One of the biggest ones, actually. It is recommended that all makeup items be replaced every 6 months or so.
I know your funds are pretty limited at the moment but what I would do if I were you is gradually buy new stuff over time (perhaps one item every paycheque or so). And tell the kids this stuff is yours and is off limits to them.
If you can afford it, buy some stuff for the kids too - though at that age the cheapest stuff you can find will make them just as happy as the more expensive stuff. Don't forget free samples as well (either for yourself and the kids). They are always giving them away in dept. stores.
And since you are on the web already, check out the websites of some of the major manufacturers of makeup, they usually have promotional items that they give away free. You would have to wait a few months to get them but what the hell, they are free............
And not only for makeup - check out other manufacturers of personal hygiene products. You can get tons of free stuff if you take the time to fill out their order forms - soap, shampoo, body gel, lotion, nail polish, etc, etc.

there's enough makeup in this house to sink a battle ship. I think I'll make mine hands off though.

In my house with 5 females, there a a few "hygeine" items i buy every time I do a big shop (once a week).
Shampoo, conditioner, maxi pads and bumwipe. If I don't.. we run out.

I would make mine hands off. You can get a spray bottle and mix 1 part alcohol to 4 parts water and spray it lightly on the makeup to rid some of the germs. Also, dont forget to wash the applicators and brushes in some dish soap and dry them over night.
I cannot even imagine how much money I would waste if I tossed my make up every 6 months. On a daily basis, I use a mild cleanser, a toner and a moisturizer with sunblock and chapstick or lip gloss. I RARELY wear make up unless we're going out somewhere special. When I DO wear make up, it's foundation to even out my skin tone, blush and black eyeliner and mascara applied lightly. Sometimes lipstick if I can locate it. ;D

Makeup? What's that? ;D

No kidding. I seriously have the same make up I bought for when I got married. That's the stuff I use for special occasions.
