Won't be long now before you hold that precious baby. Do you think you'll go the full month? When you were pregnant with Alexa did you have her early, late or close to your due date? I am so excited for you. Babies are so wonderful. :)

I have no idea if I'll go early or late. He "feels" lower and heavier, but that's "normal" the second time around, so I've heard. My doc seems to think he's "bigger" than Lex. Oy. :D I was 8 days late with Lex and she was 7lbs 8 oz.

Won't be long now. Maybe he will be early - all mine were two to three weeks early - and 6 pounders. I sure hope he isnt bigger than Alexa was - but as long as he is healthy...:)
The name is adorable. A good solid name. One that can be shortened for a tiny child and still be proudly used by a President.
Good choice.
I'll bet you are really ready for him to get here. The last month is pretty hard and they seem to grow every day!
Hope your delivery goes quickly.

Just twiddling my damn thumbs. I'm at "that" point where I can;t do much of anything useful, know what I mean? Well, I can wash the floor on my hands and knees, takes the pressure off my back. ;D
I hope he stays put for about another week, then he'll be "cooked" and I will have less of a chance of having a NICU baby, which would be an awful way to begin the attachment. I want him home, in my bed, nursing, immediately. ;D
I want him to be healthy (but under 10 pounds) that's all I ask. ;D

My second grandchild was born on Jan. 2nd and to my amazement was named "John H. S." after grandpa. I was surprised and deeply honored. Mama (Jennifer S.) let it be known from day one that he was "John" and not "Johnny". We have gotten away with calling him "little John" and "baby John" but none of this "Johnny" stuff.

She should have been having Braxton-Hicks contractions long before now. If I recall correctly they are more noticable on second and later pregnancies and also postpartum contractions are more intense and painful with second pregnancies.

I've had Braxton hicks contractions since about 20 weeks, but they have recently started to hurt a bit.
As for the post partum contractions, I hope they don;t hurt more, I had some pretty intense ones for about a week.

Painful but normal. They are more intense if you are breastfeeding but your uterus will get back into shape a lot quicker.

Ouch!
JohnS is right about them being pretty intense after subsuquent wee ones - but if you massage your tummy really well - right after the delivery - it seems to help it return to size quicker and shortens the recovery time.
The docs made me stop nursing with all three of mine - but I remember with the last just how bad the contractions hurt. No fair! After all you just went through. :)
But - as always - the joy of having the baby will far outweigh any discomfort.
Has the doc checked for any dialation yet? As low as you describe makes me wonder if the little guy - being a typical boy - won't try to 'jump the gun' a bit?
How's your back holding out?

The way nature designed us. ;) Can't get those uterus reducing hormones and contractions from a bottle you know. :D
The docs made me stop nursing with all three of mine -
That's too bad, and it was probably without cause. Even now, pediatricians and OBs are woefully uneducated about lactation. They get about two hours total of breastfeeding education in med school and they know jack squat.
But - as always - the joy of having the baby will far outweigh any discomfort.
Of course. One day of ouch and about a week recovery for a lifetime of good. Totally worth it.

Dialating and effacing. Not too much though, and normal. He has not yet engaged, I can still feel his head resting on my hip bone. I can actually "feel" it if I push on my belly a bit. It does seem large. :o
How's your back holding out?
Have sciatica this time around. It hurts pretty bad actually, but wearing sneakers all day and remembering to maintain good posture as well as carefully arranging myself in bed has helped some. No cure for pregnancy induced sciatica except birth. ;D

Lex never engaged either, my OB said she had the shortest cord she had ever seen. She was under my ribs when I was 10 CM dialated. Tj, he's not up that high, I have absolutely no rib pain this time. the top of my uterus is about a half an inch below my breastbone. He must be REALLY cramped up in there though, poor guy. ;D

THat short cord thing is kind of worrisome - but she turned out great. I wonder why that happened?
My sis - was full term (I know I have told this before) when she quit feeling the baby kicking and it had died from a ruptured cord. Her devastation was incredible.
Her doc told her then (I don't know if it is true) that boy babies - even after birth are more fragile than girls. Have you heard that?

genetic anomoly. She kept crowning and then popping back up when I was pushing. My OB uttered the "c-section" word after about an hour of pushing and I said, "no way lady, get down there and catch" I pushed HARD on the next contraction and out she came. ;D

If I don;t feel him move for an hour, I lay on my back and push him around a little bit to wake him up to make sure he's ok. I would be absolutely devastated. Cord accidents are very rare though.

Yes. Baby boys are more prone to SIDS than baby girls. I have two theories. One, they are flooded with pregnancy hormones in the last weeks of pregnancy and during L&D and girl's systems are more compatible with those hormones, And after birth, I think circumcision overwhelms their nervous systems and some can't handle the shock.

You may just be on to something there. That needs to be researched. Seriously!
Enough studies have linked child abuse to problem such as "failure to thrive" and many emotional problems in later life - and circumcision has GOT to be an AWFUL, HORRIFIC pain!
A tiny newbory cannot tell the difference in pain caused by abuse (the baby in the skillet) and pain said to be for his own good (cutting off part of his penile skin).
What legacy do we leave these tiny, innocent boys?
I think you may be VERY right on your theory. I plan on sharing it with others. It makes sense.

this should be a very easy question to answer empirically from existing medical records of the past few years. Lots of baby boys are not circumcised these days so plenty of data should be available. I would think the main thing necessary to control for would be social/economic/education status of the moms. From what I gather not snipping is more a middle/upper class thing.

A lot of studies have been done of pain during circumcision. It is easy to measure chemical and physical reactions during the procedure. It is clear that MANY of the infants go into shock, which is why parents think it didn't hurt that much, since thier son "fell asleep" right after the procedure. It is truely horrific how many doctors still tell the parents that it does not hurt and even worse is how many are done with absolutely NO pain control at all. Makes me want to vomit.
Also, circumcised boys have MUCH stronger reactions to shots (vaccines) than girls and non-circumcised boys. Circumcision almost "conditions" thier body to react strongly and poorly to painful stimuli, or at least that's how the theory goes.

If circumcision is to remain legal, which it will, no doubt, it needs to be ILLEGAL to do it without pain mnagement. You would be surprised at how very many doctors still perform the surgery with ZERO pain control.

Before I take a wild stab in the dark how much did Lex weigh and how long was she? Also how close to the due date were you with her?
Ok, if you're going to do predictions I think it's only fair that ya'll have some details on which to base your guesses.
Alexa was 8 days late, 7 lbs 8 oz and 21 inches. SHe is now only in the 20th percentile for height and weight however, she's a peanut.
I'm 5 feet tall, my husband is 5'9". My husband's sister however is 6 feet tall (and model gorgeous) ;D My family on both sides are all short, except my Dad who is 6'2".
I was born on my due date at 8lbs 9oz, my husband was born two weeks late, and barely weighed 5 pounds, but his mother was a heavy drinker and smoker so that probably affected his size at birth. His sister was born on her due date at 8lbs 6 oz, despite the alcohol and tobacco.
What is the due date? It's very possible to go two weeks over.
The due date according to the "official" gestational chart used by all OBs is Feb 28th. The due date based on my own charts of ovulation and the date of conception is Feb 24th. Feb 24th is MY prediction, BTW and I predict he will weigh 8 lbs, there about. My uterus is measuring a week ahead, or just on schedule off and on through out my pregnancy, he is not a HUGE baby, although my OB thinks he will be "bigger" than Alexa was.

Man - I was going to revise my prediction - down a 1/2 inch in length - until I saw TJs aunt was 6ft! I'm staying the course!

I was fighting with the nurses over the pit drip for HOURS. But, I "couldn't" go home because my water broke. Grrr, finally got the pit, which makes the contractions hard and fast, I HATED that. I refuse to have pitocin this time, no matter what. I'm going to try to stay home until transition begins then make a mad dash, the hospital is only 5 or 10 minutes away.

I am keeping my fingers crossed that your plan works out better for you - than it did for me.
I had been hospitalized a week before my first was born - and had the same intentions you did with my second - to put it off as long as possible. I told my husband to go on to bed the evening before - I knew it was close. At 4 AM - I had to crawl across the house to wake him up - when we got to the hosp - I was fully fully dialated and went right to delivery. Smart little me, huh? But my son - although turned correctly - face down - head first - had a broad head and was not coming out. His head bones were not giving and neither was I. Thank goodness my woman doc was gone on vacation because after a few hours in delivery - it was too late for a C-sec - they had to pull him - and they did. Big, strong doc pulled - I pushed and even the delivery table was getting pulled. Later the doc said that those were the kind of deliveries that didnt' make it a century before.

It depends on what happens. I'll try to post, but it may not be possible, we'll be trying to get everyone situated. I'll ask my husband to post a picture after the baby is born. I doubt I'll get on the computer for several weeks after.
The big question is are you going to be hanging out here when he's a teenager?

It's hard to tell how much she REALLY understands. She "talks" to the baby, kisses and pats my belly and looks "in" my belly button and says, "I SEEEEEEEEE you baby" ;D I'm not sure she's going to be too thrilled when he comes out and sticks around...forever. ;)
Is she ready to be a sis?
Is TJ ready to be loved by her, is the REAL question? She is very aggressively affectionate, as my poor kitty cat can attest to.

Maybe, but I doubt it. I may jump on a few quick times to make a few updates, but for the most part I'll be trying to rest up while I have help around (my mom will be here) and I'll be trying to make sure I get a good latch and establish my milk so i won't have any problems.

She will be great - they really are very loving at that age.
But they sometimes don't understand what love is all about. I laid my second son (about 3 weeks old) on a blanket on the floor and his older brother (4) was supposed to "watch" him while I got clothes out of the dryer. He was very proud of his task - but when I came back he was holding the baby's face down on the blanket. I was horrified - and questioned him as to why he did that - and he told me because the baby was trying to pick up his head and he kept bumping his little nose on the blanket and he was afraid he would be hurt. It taught me a good lesson! Little helpers are wonderful - but sometimes their idea of 'help' isn't too nifty. You never know what they are going to do - and even 3 minutes can be dangerous in the best of situations. :)

LOL! Maybe sooner. I have been really lethargic over the past week or so. But today I feel really energized and I am in a housecleaning frenzy. Maybe that last big nesting episode before labor starts?? I'm trying to clean for 15 minutes, then sit down for 5 or 10 so I don't over do it. I hate sitting around when there is stuff to do though. ;D A weekend delivery would be great. ;)

Well, my due date is based on the official chart. Since I chart my own ovulation and know the day of conception, I know I AM 38 weeks. Anything past 37 weeks is considered full term. Normal pregnancies last 37-42 weeks, it's a fairly wide range since babies deveolpe at dsifferent rates once they reach the third trimester.
In any case, I'm not trying to induce labor, I'm just uncomfotable and hoping that the baby is already ready and will arrive soon. ;)

have two suggestions for reflexology during labor. If your labor slows or seems to even stop, here is a technique that may help.
Have yourself in a semi-reclining position on your back, or sitting in a chair with your feet up. Have a loved one face your feet and take hold of toes 2 and 3 on both feet. Number 1 toe being the big toe, number 5 being the pinkie toe. With both feet, firmly squeeze and release, repeatedly at the same time. After a few minutes, you may feel a warmth running up your legs and to the crotch area. This is the sensation you are looking for to speed up labor. Once you feel this, have your loved one continue until you feel that you are in active labor again.
Another suggestion for relaxation during labor:
Being in the same position, have your loved one press with a thumb (firmly, however it might be tender) at about the center of your arches. This area is for the solar plexus. Just to the left and down slightly of the arch of your right foot, and just to the right and down slightly of your arch of your left foot is the diaphragm. Have these areas pressed and held at the same time, alternating with small circles or strumming across the areas. This reflexology area on your feet will help you breathe. Increased breathing ability enables you take fuller and longer breaths and this causes relaxation, especially during contractions.
Thanks, I'll keepo that in mind in a few more weeks. ;)

Kinda funny.. I remember trying to get toddlers to smile in photos. Imgine getting a shot with 4 kids all happy in it. It's easier now that mine are older. This fall we had a family portrait fund raiser at the school.. the ex picked the photo up when it came in. I asked him how it looked.. he said.. " we all look good but the photo is off centre". Now.. this guy was quick..and it took someone quick to get a shot where everyone was smiling.. who cares if it's centred? lolol..

No, they produce colustrum, which is "pre-milk" and is high in calories and antibodies. It is enough for the baby until the mature milk comes in a few days after birth. The breasts begin "preparing" to make milk mid-pregnancy but the milk production is triggered when the placenta is expelled from the uterus..
I can't even believe I got suckered into this discussion. ::)
I won;t get into all the details. ;)

Although this is not really on topic I had a customer tell me today that her nephew was so bad the other night when she watch him she had thought about ripping her own uterus out just so she did not get tempted to have a kid. The kid is 3... apparently quite a piece of work.

At age three it is not the kid that is the root problem, but its parents.

Hey! Where's the fricking 12??? Someone (pinch) needs to be keeping up on the countdown. Just because you are getting ssssssoooooooooo ready to have TJ - doesn't mean you can slack off on your DUTIES!!!
It is only one week now until MY prediction.
Any more contractions?

You'll have to let us know what the doc says tomorrow. I wonder if you are dialating much? Feeling a lot of pressure on your bladder - or tailbone?
This is getting tooooooooo exciting!
When I log on and don't see the number for the countdown - I stop and wonder - "Is today the DAY???"
And with the very little time I will have this week - the countdown is top priority!
So - if you could PPLLLLEEEEEZZZZZEEE have the numnber posted by 6 AM - I would appreciate it. Tremendously! :D

Jeez, 6AM YOUR time, or mine? ;) I'm pretty sure that at 6 AM YOUR time, I am still sleeping.
Lots of pressure, I am interested to see how dialated I am as well, but you should know I walked around dialated to 5CM with Alexa for 5 weeks. ;) Of course, she was not engaged like TJ is, she never dropped until I pushed.

Maybe you were more dialated than you thought and he read some NoPC posts and changed his mind about being born.

Maybe. Maybe he decided he would rather not be born on an election year, but I gotta tell you he is NOT waiting until after the election! ;)

Well, mom just called, she's landed at the airport. I'm going to pick her up so I won't be on very much over the next few weeks. I'll try to keep you guys updated and I'll ask my husband to post a picture when the baby is born. Wish me lots of luck and hope for a short, uncomplicated labor!

At least drop in now and again to update us on your progress and the arrival of wee TJ.
This is absolutely SOOOOO exciting. I feel like I should be there - like my own little sis is having a baby.
Remember - Monday - is MY date!
Get some rest and enjoy this time. :)

It's going well. She's been here for a day and a half and we have already sewn two sets of curtains and a couple of outfits for the kids. We're busy and living at the fabric store. ;) She has also been making food, taking Alexa to the park and pretty much demanding that I sit down. ;D

That's great! Nothing better than that mother-support and bonding during the birth of a new baby.
I have a request.
When you DO go into labor - and since you already KNOW what it will be like - could you give us a head's up - NOT on this thread?
It might be too easy to miss.
How about a new "It's TIME!" thread - just so we all know?
Hang in there kiddo. My predicted date is only three days away!

One week to go, although, I think we're getting REAL close. I've had some really strong (sit down and BREATH) contractions today.
I will try to post a thread up in general discussion before we leave Tiger, it really depends on the circumstances though, KWIM? ;)

Say that to me when I'm in full fledged labor and you're bound to get your puny head ripped off, just thought I'd warn you. ;) I'll do my best, but I DO have priorities, I need to get Alexa's care squared away, I need to get my phone calls in order and I need to try to deal wth labor while doing all of that so if I fail to make it online, I'm sure ya'll will understand.

I can't deliver on the 2nd because I didn't get my absentee ballot and I would hate to miss the election. There are several state ballot initiatives, and more importantly, some local stuff that I really want to vote on. ;D
I'd be surprised if we make it throught he weekend. On the other hand, that may be just wishful thinking. ;) Alexa's birthday is on Sunday, I hope they don't have to share a birthday. I would hate to miss her birthday too. ;)

Pony told us that you actually delivered one of your kids. Did you know that had you been in SOuth Dakota, you could have been put in JAIL for that?? Anyway, I thought it was a cool story. :-*

We were doing a midwife thing......but she was late, or at least my ex wasn't waiting... :P
Delivered a couple while I was on an ambulance crew, but way different deal when it's your own. Not one of our better decisions actually... ;D
