View Full Version : Is there any possible way I can do this?
I have an older Dell and it is loaded with over 1000 MP3s. I want to get them off of there and clean up some memory. But there is no burn drive on that puter.
I have a couple of other computers with burn drives. Both Compaqs. Is there anyway to hook them together and let one of the ones with the burn drive copy the Mp3s onto CDs?
I am afraid to take the burn drive out and try to intall it in the Dell - because the big computer came with it installed and there is no software with it to make it run on the Dell and the other one is in my laptop and I think it is staying there.
Does anyone ever connect computers? Is it even possible?
This is way over my head but I wanna do it anyway.

Know anybody who has an external CD-Writer?

Or a Zip drive. I have an external Zip drive which you'd be welcome to use if you lived nearby. That's an easy way to transfer buttloads of crap from one computer to another.
No. I really do not own nor know of anyone who own either. I really hoped I could hook them together somehow.
I may have to buy one if I can't figure out a way.

Hooking them together is over my head, but I happen to know that any idiot can plug in a Zip drive. :)
One hint: USB is the way to go with externals. Much faster than parallel port.

Ahem...two words....
Backup + Restore?
<That'll be one blow job...thank you.>
Sheesh.

You could take the covers off both computers, put them side by side, disconnect the ribbon to the computer with the CD burner. Take the ribbon from the Dell and hook it to the burner. Turn on your Dell and Windows will install it for you, it should have the drivers, it not you can go online and download them onto your Dell. Once your Dell recognizes your new hardware you can copy your files off your hard drive onto the CD.
Leave the Compaq unplugged, all you're going to do is 'borrow' the burner. After you're done you can switch back and the Compaq won't even know. :)
badnew's way sounds less scary. I have never taken the covers off. I guess I didnt' know how they came off.
Thought they would blow up or something.

I know her!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Blow up? ;D What are you going to back them up on?

I knew that would ring a bell with you. ;D

Cherrybomb: Is there a network card in the older machine? If so, you can hook them together via an ethernet connection. That would be the least painful way to do it.

I don't have the ethernet which is okay because I dont' know what a network card is either.
I was thinking there might be something easy like sticking something in speaker or USB ports that transfered info.
external cd writers are cheap as hell. And even I can use one. :D

Okay, all you techies, stay out of this. She needs the dumbass approach, and Jeny and I are the only ones who see the light on this.

ignorance is bliss baby.
Actually, I JUST figured out how to use my CD writer that my dear hubby gave me for christmas LAST year. I had WAAAAAY too many pics on my puter.
Now, I just need to figure out how to make a mixed CD for my car. The little booklet thingy is written in greek/nerd terms.

If you don't have a network card, you can get a parallel connector for 10 or 15 bucks at Best Buy or someplace -- both computers are bound to have a parallel port. Then you can copy the files you want to burn onto the hard drive of the other computer and burn them from there. It's a LOT slower than using a network card though -- it might take a few hours to copy the files from one computer to the other, depending on how many you have.

Actually they're usually at least twice as expensive as internal writers. That being said, they're still not that expensive anymore.

Use it as an excuse to buy the Ipod MP3 player with a 20 GB HD. It’s dead sexy. You have to install a fire wire card, but it’s not hard at all.

You have to INSTALL an internal writer. And if you don't do it right, they tend to break. Take it from me, it's better if the techie challenged avoids "installing" hardware.

Is there nothing we can do to make them understand?

Apparently not. I guess we should take this as a compliment, they really think we're a lot smarter than we are. :D

Installing an internal CD writer is very easy, and it’s hard to do it wrong. It’s a great way to start learning about a PC. It’s not that hard, really it is not, and you have plenty people to ask advice from while you install it.

They won't break if you don't hook them up right -- they just won't work. Go back and hook it up correctly, and it'll work just fine. Moonchild is right -- installing an IDE device isn't hard at all.

Heck, sometimes I think they should avoid installing software too. As a matter of fact, there are quite a few people that simply aren't cut out for using a computer in the first place, if you ask me. I come from the days when you had to know something about computers in order to do anything with them.
