The Supreme Court of Canada ruled Friday that a British Columbia school board should not have banned books at the kindergarten and Grade 1 level that depicted same-sex parents.

The three books are Asha's Mums, Belinda's Bouquet and One Dad, Two Dads, Brown Dads, Blue Dads. The books depicted same-sex parents in a favourable light, triggering complaints from parents who took objection on religious grounds.

The Surrey board said it ordered the ban because the books were not suitable for five- and six-year olds. The board also said many parents objected to the books because they regard homosexuality as a sin.

But the court said the moral objections of some parents are not a basis for a ban. The court also concluded "tolerance is always age-appropriate".

Good for the court. :)

Reality (of this nature) is suitable for 5- and 6-year-olds. The fact that a child may have 'two mommies' or 'two daddies' is not a question of 'morality' for them at that age. As far as they know, it's just something that happens.

Because it is the only thing they know. Like a kid from a single parent household.

I really don't think a 5 or 6 year old is going to give a shit if his classmate has one daddy or two. With the divorice rate a lot of these kids have 4 or more "parents".

It's the same argument they use here to try and force creationism as "science". ::)

Seems to me that it is a grave provocation by the State to use the taxmonies of the overwhelming Majority to promote a lifestyle as acceptable that the same overwhelming Majority regards as repugnant.........AND in Government schools which that same Majority's CHILDREN are compelled to attend.

I seriously doubt that the books are pornographic, but you know what they say about dirty minds. Don't waste yours.

As to parental objections, if those parents object to the books then their children shouldn't be exposed to them, but banning the books does deny access to the books by children of parents who don't object. Find an alternative for the kids who's parents object. Simple solution.

I wouldn't force a book like that on truelies's or nickg's kids.

Thanky you Liz. If more people were like you and realised that tolerance must be a two-way street, things would be a lot more tolerable.

I don't believe in total bans, but I do believe very strongly in parental rights.

Perhaps we should ban reading of the OT then as it makes numerous references to homosexualtiy.

But the references are NOT the problem. The problem is the implication of State sanctioned approval. The OT as you may recall harshly condemns homosexuality.
