December 15, 2003 - -- On a day that marks the 30-year anniversary of the American Psychiatric Association's (APA) removal of homosexuality from its official list of mental disorders, the American Counseling Association (ACA) is the first of the major mental health professional associations to have an openly gay president. Dr. Mark Pope was elected by the membership of ACA to serve as their President in a year that has included a landmark Supreme Court decision for gay rights, a controversial election of an openly gay Episcopal bishop, and gay marriage rulings in Canada and Massachusetts. ACA is the world's largest association exclusively representing over 50,000 professional counselors in various practice settings throughout the United States and around the world.
Since APA's 1973 declaration, major accomplishments in the mental health field have occurred for gays and lesbians. The Association for Gay, Lesbian, and Bisexual Issues in Counseling was formed in 1975 and officially accepted by ACA in 1996. Sexual orientation is included in the nondiscrimination clauses of ACA and other major mental health organizations, and ACA joined with other major mental health organizations in 1999 publicly opposing so called "reparative therapy" for homosexuality.
In a recent speech at the American Psychological Association annual convention, Dr. Pope stated, "By a vote of the Board of Directors of the American Psychiatric Association in 1973, we were removed from their 'Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders.' They waved their magic wand and we were made 'sane' overnight. Do you understand the power that we, as mental health professionals, have to effect people's lives? We who are gay, lesbian, or bisexual were adjudged mentally ill because of the prejudices of the dominant culture. We who are in the mental health professions have responsibility for that. That is why my election to lead one of the largest mental health organizations in the world is so important. As the first openly gay man elected to such a position, I represent a final and total repudiation of that past."
Dr. Pope, Associate Professor in the Division of Counseling & Family Therapy at the University of Missouri - St. Louis, describes himself as a "poor, gay, Cherokee boy from rural southeast Missouri." He was one of the petitioners in the landmark Supreme Court decision Gay Lib v. University of Missouri that established the right of gay, lesbian, and bisexual student groups to exist on college campuses across the nation.

Several demonstrations were held Sunday in Idaho. A coalition from various local churches gathered in Boise's Julia Davis Park in support of a Ten Commandments monument which was put up by the Fraternal Order of Eagles in 1965. A group wanting to put up an anti-homosexual monument in the park picketed some Boise churches Sunday morning, and counter-demonstrations were held to protest that effort. The Idaho group supporting the Ten Commandments monument had 10,000 yard signs to distribute to residents backing the marker. But an attorney with the American Civil Liberties Union of Idaho said Saturday that placing a religious monument on state property is implied endorsement of religion and could be easily overturned in court. Some residents are leery about religious symbols in the Statehouse and the park. [AP]

In light of the political successes of the gay movement, the overt attacks on the youth groups, churches and schools and local governments it would seem the question was ridiculously rhetorical. Given that the homosexual population is two or three percent and not more of the total in this country and not all homosexuals are politically and socially active I'd say it has found some "resonance". Hate and revenge are strong motivators and from the rhetoric most of the activists spew I'd say that this fantasy is more like a manifesto. In fact, it has the look of a blatant rip-off of the Communist Manifesto. We might even call it the Cummunist Manifesto. These people are pigs and their day of reckoning is dawning.

It would be if it only took two people to publish a magazine with any circulation. In reality, it takes not just those who publish it, but a subscriber base. I have no idea how large the circulation of this thing was, but if it were that inconsequential, or if the subscribers' reaction to the article was clearly negative, those who defend Swift would have done better to cite that fact rather than try to essentially claim the piece was meaningless. After all, it did claim to speak for the "gay" community.
If you guys want that particular albatross off your neck, all you have to do is cite the obvious: Swift and his ilk are hate-filled bigots, to put it charitably.

Dr. Judd Marmor, whose criticism of the belief that homosexuality was a mental disorder made him an important ally of the gay struggle to force American psychiatry to change its views, died Tuesday at the University of California at Los Angeles Medical Center after a short illness. He was 93.
Marmor played a large role in the successful campaign to remove homosexuality from the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, the authoritative compendium of mental illnesses maintained by the American Psychiatric Association. Marmor was "one of the foreparents of the movement," said Ronni Sanlo, director of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Center at UCLA. "It couldn't have happened without that change in the APA."
Marmor's death came a day after the 30th anniversary of the American Psychiatric Association's vote to "depathologize" homosexuality on Dec. 15, 1973. Marmor also advised Abigail Van Buren of the "Dear Abby" column, who was among the first national figures to support gay rights.
