I apologize for not being around a lot. We've been dealing with a family crisis which unfortunately has not turned out very well at all.

My younger (age 42) brother passed away this last Saturday (10/26) from the end result of too much substance abuse. Alcohol for sure and who knows what else. What got him was liver and kidney failure.

My parents are both living and are up in years (pushing 80). As you can imagine, this has not been easy on them. I will be very unavailable shortly as I'm going home to help with the funeral (read "moral support" for mom).

I also want to issue a request as a fellow poster that we clean up our act a little bit. There is some stuff going on that is a bit distressing and I'd like to see it dealt with in an adult manner.

We've been very non-restrictive on NoPC and we have a track record of not banning people. But by the same token, I also expect our fellow posters to stay within the bounds of civil discourse.

Now...this is NOT saying we can't disagree. The old timers alone know of my verbal slugfests with friend Satterfield over theological considerations.

May I suggest that we discuss the issues and not go into high school stuff?

That is sad about your brother, Lance.
I hope you can minister to your family
about this, especially your mother.

Thank you, Thales, for cleaning up your
moniker.

Lance, sorry to hear about your brother. I've got one who is hanging by a thread. About a month ago he was diagnosed with terminal cancer, the doctor did not expect him to live through the night. That was a month ago, and now he is home and going through kemo.

His name is Sam. He used to drive an Army truck all around the state, and when he came here to visit on those trips, he wore his Army uniform. That's why my kids call him Uncle Sam, imagine that. Like our country, Uncle Sam is very sick.

Like your bro, he used to drink a lot, but he quit completely about ten years ago. He is a good guy, nothing lke me. Wish Uncle Sam luck.
