Help,

I only have an old PC with Win98 but I don’t want to replace it yet.

Internet explorer no longer responds.. I keep getting error messages whenever it attempt to load.. like a whole lot of little windows programs failing to respond and the good old failed at memory module xxx etc

I have reloaded the operating system and a newer version of explorer.. no result.

Before I go attempting a more expensive repair has anyone got any ideas ?

So, you've wiped it and reinstalled the OS, or just done a reinstall?

One thing to try (to weed out any potential hardware problems) is: If you know how to replace RAM, take a look inside-try switching the RAM modules positions. If it's a pentium (classic Pentium) you'll have to have two in there for it to work. If it's a PII, Athlon, etc. that uses DIMMs-just try taking one out and using one at a time to see if maybe one of the RAM modules has a bad bit.

Just something to try on the hardware side.

I had a similar problem that occured when I launched IE6 in multiple windows. I ran scandisk and it turned out there were multiple errors on the disk, which were corrected and it runs fine now.

With a memory error, you can also check the "systems resource monitor" under programs>accessories>system tools to make sure you're not topping out the system. Sometimes too many programs running in background causes that sort of problem, too.
