Threads like this have opened my eyes for so much excellent music. I frequently DL samples of names I have not heard, especially if mentioned by a person with similar taste as mine.

Are K’s choice well known in the states? I love ‘not an addict’. Have you heard anything by Anouk? She has worked with K’s choice previously.

They have achieved cult status here among 25-32 year olds despite not an addict being the only airtime hit. I just think she's got a great voice; a smoother Joplin without the tone deafness. Joplin could rock the blues, though. Yeah, I've heard of Anouk but haven't heard her; I'll check her out, too. How's Eminem doin' in Norway? ;D

Shut the xxxx up child. He’s a marketing wonder who say offensive things to sell more records, just like Brittney and Averill.

Sigh … I miss the old rebels, back when being a rebel meant more than marketing. Of course being 30, I’m not old enough to have experienced people like Hendrix, but it still feels like home, sort of speak.

BTW I understand what he says; it just does not impress me much. Country Joe McDonalds on the other hand ;) I’ll be listening a lot to him … say mid February?

Dead Postman (http://home.online.no/~morchris/sounds/03-Dxd%20postmann.mp3)

Typical 80’s sound but I find it thoroughly cute. Don’t know about you guys as you would not understand the lyrics, the dialect or know the written work of Arne Bergren. The words goes something like this:

The mailman might be ill
The mailman might be dead
For all I know the mailman could be lying in the ditch somewhere
With all your letters and your words spread all over

The phone might be disconnected
The phone company might have taken the day off
Or maybe the whole world phones me
Phones me everyone at once

And had not the sky been quite so grey
I would rent a plane
Writing in smoke letters
Writing that you are pretty

And had not the sky been quite so grey
I would rent a plane
Writing in smoke letters
Writing that you are pretty

Letter that never arrives
Who will send them now?
Memories from next summer
Who will dream the dreams now?

And had not the sky been quite so grey
I would rent a plane
Writing in smoke letters
Writing that you are pretty

And had not the sky been quite so grey
I would rent a plane
Writing in smoke letters
Writing that you are pretty

[instrumental]

And had not the sky been quite so grey
I would rent a plane
Writing in smoke letters
Writing that you are pretty

And had not the sky been quite so grey
I would rent a plane
Writing in smoke letters
Writing that you are pretty

Yup.Quite.I was working in the Rotten Apple and met Tiny.He was an extremely intelligent, articulate person, and a true eccentric. He was a throwback to 20's musicians who toured the country as solo acts, singing and playing either 4-string banjo or ukelele.I never worked for him,but would have been honored to do so.

Saw em twice,74 and 75.They warmed up Frampton on his big live tour that was recorded for that lame-o live album.

I think that period of his career is an embarrassment even to him. Detroit gave me the impression that he's more fond of his Humble Pie roots. He paid lip service to the radio hits, but he let the audience do most of the singing. ::) And he closed it with I Don't Need No Doctor. Not quite as good without Mariott, but at least he paid homage...

You mean listening to Mazzy? :D

It’s not depressive, it’s feel good melancholy. It’s relaxing, it makes you fly, makes you feel. It’s all good. Listening to an entire Radiohead album, that’s depressive.

Bob D. Master of war

Come you masters of war
You that build all the guns
You that build the death planes
You that build the big bombs
You that hide behind walls
You that hide behind desks
I just want you to know
I can see through your masks

You that never done nothin'
But build to destroy
You play with my world
Like it's your little toy
You put a gun in my hand
And you hide from my eyes
And you turn and run farther
When the fast bullets fly

Like Judas of old
You lie and deceive
A world war can be won
You want me to believe
But I see through your eyes
And I see through your brain
Like I see through the water
That runs down my drain

You fasten the triggers
For the others to fire
Then you set back and watch
When the death count gets higher
You hide in your mansion
As young people's blood
Flows out of their bodies
And is buried in the mud

You've thrown the worst fear
That can ever be hurled
Fear to bring children
Into the world
For threatening my baby
Unborn and unnamed
You ain't worth the blood
That runs in your veins

How much do I know
To talk out of turn
You might say that I'm young
You might say I'm unlearned
But there's one thing I know
Though I'm younger than you
Even Jesus would never
Forgive what you do

Let me ask you one question
Is your money that good
Will it buy you forgiveness
Do you think that it could
I think you will find
When your death takes its toll
All the money you made
Will never buy back your soul

And I hope that you die
And your death'll come soon
I will follow your casket
In the pale afternoon
And I'll watch while you're lowered
Down to your deathbed
And I'll stand o'er your grave
'Til I'm sure that you're dead

Normally I don't like Christian rock because it is always too nice, too pop and generally really weenie. I needed to learn a Stephen Curtis Chapman song off of his Declaration CD for church and I'm hooked. The guy is brilliant even if his lyrics are somewhat limited in subject matter and get a bit redundant. It is just nice to hear some Christian music that isn't sappy drivel.

The Drive-By
Music and Lyrics by Glen Phillips

I was the driver for the drive-by of the neighbors dog
dad had always hated him and he said come on son
get into the vega now and
I'll go get my shotgun

it was a military holiday and kids were everywhere
I hid behind the steering wheel and tried to disappear
tried to speak but couldn't
dad was whistling and drinking beer

And I prayed dear God
if you save this dog
I will never get high
I will never jack off
I will do all the things that I should but have not
I'll be a good boy from now on

we turned arounnd the corner soon and saw the neighbors yard
dad lit up a cigarette and rolled the window down
and grinning like an idiot
he stuck his head and body out

And I prayed dear God
if you save this dog
I will never get high
I will never jack off
I will be all the things that I should but am not
I'll be a good boy from now on
I'll be a good boy from now on

Well he popped in a shell
took aim with the gun
then a flash and a bang
and the dog it was gone

it jumped up and it ran away
dad had shot right through it's chain

well dad said take me to the dairy freeze
I wanna have a shake
we sipped them on the benches there
and stared out on the lake
and dad has never said another word about that day

And I hope you're not disappointed God
cause I still get high
and I still jack off
and you knew I was lying but you still saved that dog
you're such a good God
you're such a good good God
you're such a good goddamn backwards dog
and I'll be a good boy from now on

Apparently a true story, except that Glen _ gave _ it a happy ending. There you go :)

Yesterday I got the Dixie Chicks CD that has their remake of Stevie Nicks song "Landslide". They do a great job with the song. I LOVE that song, here are the lyrics...

Landslide
(Stevie Nicks)

I took my love and I took it down
Climbed a mountain then I turned around
And I saw my reflection in the snow covered hills
Well the landslide brought me down

Oh, mirror in the sky
What is love?
Can the child within my heart rise above
Can I sail through the changing ocean tides
Can I handle the seasons of my life

Uh ah ... uh ah .... uh ah ...

Well, I've been afraid of changin'
'Cause I built my life around you
But time makes you bolder
Children get older
I'm getting older too

Well ...

(Instrumental)

Well, I've been afraid of changin'
'Cause I built my life around you
But time makes you bolder
Children get older
I'm getting older too

Well, I'm getting older too

So, take this love and take it down
Yeah, and if you climb a mountain and ya turn around
And If you see my reflection in the snow covered hills
Well the landslide brought me down

If you see my reflection in the snow covered hills

Well maybe ...
Well maybe ...
Well maybe ...

The landslide will bring you down.

I don’t really like Dixie Chicks. They are the most ‘bland’ band I can think of. I always feel like I’m waiting for something that never comes when I listen to their music.

Not the worst I have heard though, this song that is, and while searching/dl it I found that Smashing Pumpkins and Tori Amos had done cover versions as well.

That’s why I like these threads, although you guys don’t seem to listen to music much.

I like the Dixie Chicks, mindless music, it is a bit bland though, I agree. They have another song I really like, the one about killing the abusive husband. Not that I condone that behavior of course. ;D

But not as well as Stevie Nicks. The Chicks have fantastic voices, but Stevie's is awesome.

OMG Pony, I LOVE that album. I have worn out several Meatloaf CDs and a few cassettes as well!

My favorite song from that Album is "Two Out of Three Ain't Bad"

Baby we can talk all night
But that ain't getting us nowhere
I told you everything I possibly can
There's nothing left inside of here

And maybe you can cry all night
But that'll never change the way that I feel
The snow is really piling up outside
I wish you wouldn't make me leave here
I poured it on and I poured it out
I tried to show you just how much I care
I'm tired of words and I'm too hoarse to shout
But you've been cold to me so long
I'm crying icicles instead of tears

And all I can do is keep on telling you
I want you
I need you
But - there ain't no way I'm ever gonna love you
Now don't be sad
'Cause two out of three ain't bad
Now don't be sad
'Cause two out of three ain't bad

You'll never find your gold on a sandy beach
You'll never drill for oil on a city street
O know you're looking for a ruby in a mountain of rocks
But there ain't no Coupe de Ville hiding at the bottom
of a Cracker Jack box

I can't lie
I can't tell you that I'm something I'm not
No matter how I try
I'll never be able
To give you something
Something that I just haven't got

There's only one girl that I will ever love
And that was so many years ago
And though I know I'll never get her out of my heart
She never loved me back
Ooh I know
I remember how she left me on a stormy night
She kissed me and got out of our bed
And though I pleaded and I begged her not to
walk out that door
She packed her bags and turned right away
And she kept on telling me
She kept on telling me
She kept on telling me
I want you
I need you
But there ain't no way I'm ever gonna love you
Now don't be sad
'Cause two out of three ain't bad
Don't be sad
'Cause two out of three ain't bad

Baby we can talk all night

Nothing But A Child

Once upon a time
In a far off land
Wise men saw a sign
And set out 'cross the sand
With songs apraised to sing
They travled day and night
With precious gifts to bring
Guided by a light

They chased a brand new star
Ever towards the west
Over mountains far
And when it came to rest
They scarse believed their eyes
They'd come so many miles
This miracle they prized
Was nothing but a child

Nothing but a child
Could wash those tears away
Or guide a weary world
Into the light of day
And nothing but a child
Could help erase those lines
So once again we all
Can be children for a while

Now all around the world
In every little town
Every day is heard
A precious little sound
And every mother kind
And every father proud
Looks down in awe to find
Another chance allowed

And nothing but a child
Could wash those tears away
Or guide a weary world
Into the light of day
And nothing but a child
Could help erase those lines
So once again we all
Can be children for a while

Did they have the orchestra with them? If so, even better.

A little known Moody Blues track is "Forever Autumn", by Justin Heyward. It is on Jeff Wayne's "War of the Worlds" project. (Which is pretty kick-ass itself.)

If you do not know what that is, think of it as the successor of Rick Wakeman's type of projects. (Journey to the Center of the Earth, et al) Story set to music/narration. WotW was great because they had Richard Burton narrating.

I saw her sitting in the rain
Raindrops falling on her
She didn't seem to care
She sat there and smiled at me
Then I knew... I knew... I knew... I knew... I knew...
She could make me happy... happy... Happy...
She could make me very happy..
Flowers in her hair... flowers everywhere
Everywhere...

I love the flower girl
Oh I don't know just why; she simply caught my eye
I love the flower girl
She seemed so sweet and kind; she crept in to my mind
To my mind... to my mind

I knew I had to say hello
Hello... hello
She smiled up at me
And she took my hand and we walked through the park alone
And I knew... I knew... I knew... I knew... I knew...
She had made me happy... happy... Happy...
She had made me very happy...
Flowers in her hair... flowers everywhere
Every here ...

I love the flower girl
Oh I don't know just why; she simply caught my eye
I love the flower girl
She seemed so sweet and kind; she crept in to my mind
To my mind ... to my mind

Suddenly, the sun broke through
See the sun
I turned around she was gone
Where did she go?
And all I had left was one little flower in my hand
But I knew... I knew... I knew... I knew... I knew...
She had made me happy... happy... happy...
She had made me very happy..
Flowers in her hair... flowers everywhere
Everywhere...

I love the flower girl
Was she reality or just a dream to me?
I love the flower girl
Her love showed me the way to find a sunny day
Sunny day... sunny day... sunny day
I love the flower girl
Was she reality or just a dream to me?

I cry too, when I hear our National Anthem. At very least I get chills from the Star Spangled Banner.. mostly because I greatly admire the Americans sense on Nationality.

In Days of yore,
From Britain's shore
Wolfe the dauntless hero came
And planted firm Britannia's flag
On Canada's fair domain.
Here may it wave,
Our boast, our pride
And joined in love together,
The thistle, shamrock, rose entwined,
The Maple Leaf Forever.

[CHORUS]
The Maple Leaf
Our Emblem Dear,
The Maple Leaf Forever.
God save our Queen and heaven bless,
The Maple Leaf Forever.

At Queenston Heights and Lundy's Lane
Our brave fathers side by side
For freedom's home and loved ones dear,
Firmly stood and nobly died.
And so their rights which they maintained,
We swear to yeild them never.
Our watchword ever more shall be
The Maple Leaf Forever

[CHORUS]

Our fair Dominion now extends
From Cape Race to Nootka Sound
May peace forever be our lot
And plenty a store abound
And may those ties of love be ours
Which discord cannot sever
And flourish green for freedom's home
The Maple Leaf Forever

This is a song called "The Maple Leaf forever"
In a way, it is more of a National Anthem than Oh Canada. Oh Canada is changed from time to time to be "politically correct"
About 40 years ago this song was sung as well as God Save the Queen and Oh Canada at functions.
Canada is part of the British Empire, but even now in our poilitically correct BS society, mostly we do not even sing God Save the Queen.
During the two world wars, The Maple Leaf Forever was better appreciated.

Sons of Somerled
Highland Farewell
Stone of Destiny

If there are more out there of which I am unaware, I would love to have any titles you may know. My local music shop doesn't keep much of that sort of thing in stock, but she is great about ordering titles for me. If I can tell her what I want, I usually have it in a couple of days.

Since I responded to your question, I do hope it was directed to me (wondering if I should feel foolish...).

Unfortunately, my knowledge of Gaelic is limited to: Ciamar a tha sibh? Feasgar math dhuibh. And, ‘S e ur beatha. My pronunciation causes the conversation to switch to English quickly. ;D

Rhetorical...? It wasn't intended to be. ;)

Have you ever listened to the Wicked Tinkers? I think their group motto is "Loud, not Proud". They certainly try very hard to live up to it. They're great.

When I am feeling contemplative, I find that I listen to a lot of Loreena McKennitt. There is something about her voice and music that instantly transports you to a different place and time. There is nothing better than a leather bound journal, a good fountain pen, a pipe and Loreena in the background to help me organize my thoughts.

New subject... divulging a little too much information there...

Your command of Gaelic far exceeds any I might ever achieve. I won't even ask what you typed in your last post.

I am here in the office, but since it is Sunday, I am alone. I think it is time to put on "Stone of Destiny" and crank it up. I need to ponder battles long since fought, warriors long since fallen, and dreams that must never be lost.

It is too easy to become a cynic these days.

Fantastic music. I haven't heard a new rock band this good for a long time.

Innocent

Oh, Johnny wishes he was famous
Spends his time alone in the basement
With a Lennon and Cobain and
A guitar and a stereo

And while he wishes he could escape this
But it all seems so contagious
Not to be yourself and faceless
In a song that has no soul

I remember feeling low
I remember losing hope
And I remember all the feelings and the day they stopped

We are, we are all innocent
We are all innocent
We are, we are...

We are, we are all innocent
We are all innocent
We are, we are...

Oh, and Tina losing faith in what she knows
Hates her music, hates all of her clothes
Thinks of surgery and a new nose
Every calorie's a war

And while she wishes she was a dancer
And that she’d never heard of cancer
She wishes God would give her some answers
And make her feel beautiful

I remember feeling low
I remember losing hope
I remember all the feelings and the day they stopped

We are, we are all innocent
We are all innocent
We are, we are...

We are, we are all innocent
We are all innocent
We are, we are...

Some say love, it is a river
that drowns the tender reed.
Some say love, it is a razor
that leaves your soul to bleed.
Some say love, it is a hunger,
an endless aching need.
I say love, it is a flower,
and you its only seed.

It's the heart afraid of breaking
that never learns to dance.
It's the dream afraid of waking
that never takes the chance.
It's the one who won't be taken,
who cannot seem to give,
and the soul afraid of dyin'
that never learns to live.

When the night has been too lonely
and the road has been to long,
and you think that love is only
for the lucky and the strong,
just remember in the winter
far beneath the bitter snows
lies the seed that with the sun's love
in the spring becomes the rose.

"The Glory Of Love"

"This is a song I've been singing for a long time.
It's like an old friend.
But, you know, I think it,
it's only recently that I discovered what it's really about."

You've got to give a little, take a little,
and let your poor heart break a little.
That's the story of, that's the glory of love.

You've got to laugh a little, cry a little,
until the clouds roll by a little.
That's the story of, that's the glory of love.

As long as there's the two of us,
we've got the world and all it's charms.
And when the world is through with us,
we've got each other's arms.

You've got to win a little, lose a little,
yes, and always have the blues a little.
That's the story of, that's the glory of love.
That's the story of, that's the glory of love.

OMG, you ARE old(er). ;)

Don't tell me you wore bell bottoms and platform shoes too?

Yes, I wore 'platforms'. Before that, I wore 'stacks'. My favorite jeans were a pair of bleached out 'windowpanes' split almost to the knee along the outside seam with a triangular insert sewed in to make the 'bells' huge. Leather braclets, wide leather belt and floppy leather hat (that I made myself).

Dig it... I was far out, man. 8)

Everyday people Sly and the Family Stone

Sometimes I’m right, and I can be wrong.
My own beliefs are in my song.
A butcher, a baker, Jack Irons, a man...
It makes no difference what group I’m in.
I’m everyday people.

There is a blue one who can’t accept a green one,
For living with a fat one, trying to make the skinny one.
Different strokes for different folks...
And so on, and so on, and shooby-dooby-dooby

Oooh, structure...
We’ve got to live together...

People aren’t better, and neither are you.
We’re on the same boat, whatever we do.
You love me, you hate me, you know me and then.
You can’t figure out the bag I’m in...
I’m everyday people.

Oooh, structure...

It is an excellent album. I had to start today with some Chris Rhea - "The Road to Hell".

The first time I heard the title cut, I was coordinating the security operation for the quadrennial celebration of a town here in New Mexico. One of the activities was an outdoor concert. As the sound guy was testing his gear, he was playing it. It just knocked me off my feet.

Buckingham Nicks - quite possibly the most underrated (by it's record company) album of all time.

Probably don't remember Steppenwolfe.

Did you ever think that radio guys play Eric Clapton's "Leila" when they have to take a big dump? The long version?

Counting Crows - Around here

She parks her car outside of my house,
takes her clothes off says she's close to understanding Jesus

She knows she's just a little misunderstood, she has trouble acting normal when she's nervous.

Their lyrics are full of those wonderfully odd verses.

Thick as a Brick

Really don't mind if I sit this one out
My word's but a whisper, your deafness a shout.
I may make you feel, but I can't make you think
Your love's in the gutter, your sperms in the sink...

So you ride yourself over the fields
And you make all your animal deals
But your wise men don't know how it feels
To be thick as a brick...
