THE FALL
It snowed yesterday, but here in Wyoming the leaves are still green, the flowers still bloom, birds still fly, and newborn babies still cry.
The snow yesterday, ‘twas the first breath of fall. It’s coming, but it’s late this year. September 11 is about the time of Wyoming’s annual anticipated first snow, the first white cleansing touch of fall each year. Last year fall came nearly the same day we watched the Towers fall. But the gods are kind this year.
I love the green trees and bushes in my yard, love wife’s beautiful flowers even more; and I love the country of my birth, the country where the gods have been good, where many towers, like Wyoming’s Devil’s Tower still stand tall this fall.
I remember the panic of last October when the anthrax letters, and the deaths, began to show up in our land. What was it, five or six anthrax deaths? And over a hundred West Nile deaths this year. Even so, thank God it’s quite a small percentage of the 280 million Americans. We all had a much better chance of winning the lottery than being killed by terrorists in the worst year America has ever known.
Yet, look what we did! Went to war, an unending war, a war that’s impossible to ever really win, blindly struck out at Afghanistan, Taliban, and Al-Qeada; and eventually we are prepared to strike at all people from Muslim countries and even ready to verbally strike out at our friends in the UN.
We suspended the Constitution because we were scared, scared of those diaper-heads and camel-jockeys, scared of terrorists, scared of real and imaginary terrorists, scared of anyone who might not exactly love us, scared of people who were our friends until we stepped hard on them with the jackboots of America’s new and growing Nazi-like police state.
“To Hell with the law. We’ve got to defend ourselves!” And we did, defend ourselves against every threat, whether real or imagined, defend ourselves against every shadow behind the Bush, every shadow except the shadowy characters who stole the election in Florida and put the illegitimate and illiterate idiot President in power at a time when America sorely needed the smartest leadership we could find.
Isn’t paranoia wonderful? It is characterized by an unreasonable fear, a fear of the unknown, a fear of people who look different, fear of people who do not like us, fear of people we know have damn good reasons to hate us because our military killed their babies while our corporations raped and robbed their land.
Unreasonable fear is the megaton weapon of every terrorist.
Knock down a few tall buildings, and punch a hole in a five-sided building, strike a death blow at the heart of America’s real ruling establishment: The Military-Industrial Complex; hurt us badly, kill some very important and very powerful people, scare the right people; and then all the terrorist has to do is crawl back into the shadows and let our natural fears take over, fears which after the terrorists did their thing and disappeared are once again unreasonable.
I swear it is the instant replay of the hit-and-run tactics of Indian Chief Geronimo, improved over the years by T.E. Lawrence (Lawrence of Arabia), by Trotsky, by Ho Chi Minh, Castro, Mao, Che Guevara, and apparently by Osama bin Laden.
Or was it some other general we do not even know who was always out there in the shadows behind the Bush? Some hit-and-run general that pushed the button to make the scared establishment lash out in the dark, do many things they should not do as they respond to their paranoia? Was it perhaps even some American general, a general like Al Haig of Reagan’s assassination crisis who said, “I’m in charge here.”
General Al was in no way legally in line to take over the powers of the injured and incapacitated President. But you know what I think? I think Al had in fact scooped up the dropped football; the communications device that always goes with the President, the communications device from which America’s command to fire every one of our nuclear weapons could be given; and Al had the secret codes to give that order.
So the truth was, no matter what the law said, at that point in time General Al was in fact the Commander-in-Chief for all practical purposes. It was a coup de’tat, and the coup plotter was none other than General Paranoia.
So here we were in the fall of 2001, at the beginning of the fall of America, with an illegitimate, illiterate, incompetent, idiot President; and General Paranoia just knocked down the Towers. If you were some new Al Haig, would you trust the National Security of America to dumb Dubya, or even to some greedy capitalist Dick like Cheney that you know does not have the heart to do the dirty job? Or would you pick up the football and behind the scenes tell all people in the Visible Government what to say and what to do, and remind them of a President named Kennedy who refused to take orders from the General Paranoia of his time?
Hurt and kill some of the real establishment, and then let the paranoia of those who survived do its thing and run its course.
There is always fear, unreasonable fear, in every land. Under normal conditions the sane people can and will put a lid on the paranoids amongst them and keep them in check. But when the tallest Towers fall in the fall, when even five-sided buildings suddenly blow to hell on impact; and inside, unprepared, even generals and captains of industry are caught with their pants down, in the restroom taking their morning crap, well, after that plane flew up their butt, no sane person was ever going to get control of those surviving and scared generals and captains.
“Spare no cost! Kill the bastards who are responsible for this catastrophe! Kill everyone who might be thinking of ever trying this again! Arrest every young male of Mid East origin who is in the country! Hold their ass in jail, beat the crap out of them until they confess, and keep it up until Hell freezes over if they won’t confess! Don’t even let them talk to anyone, not even a lawyer, especially not to a lawyer! I don’t give a good god dam what the law says! To Hell with the law! This is my ass we are defending!”
With only four planes, two Towers, a five-sided building full of stars, and a hole in the ground in Pennsylvania, whoever was behind the Fall last fall did in fact destroy the fragile established visible American government, a sane government which has now been replaced by a government that runs on fear; and since the terrorists are gone, dead or run and hid, the fear which rules us is an unreasonable fear, paranoia.
Sane America fell last fall. General Paranoia has taken over. We don’t need to impeach Dubya. For all practical purposes because of his low intelligence he has always been a puppet President, a puppet manipulated by people who had brains but no conscience. George is a visible figurehead with no more real power than the idiot Prince Charles of England.
So, birds still fly, babies still cry, the leaves are still green, Devil’s Tower still stands, and America is firmly in the hands of the Invisible Government, a government that Ayn Rand Libertarians will note does not run for profit. It’s a National Security government that even the richest capitalist cannot bribe!
It’s a government that runs for security, safety, for the common good. That does not describe a capitalist system. No matter what we now call it, out of the Necessity to overcome our own paranoia, the real rugged individualism system has become a top-down National Socialist system. Capitalism fell last fall.
And if the Capitalists ever try to make a comeback, I think the terrorists will also come back like the sniper in Maryland; and then for a fleeting moment the fear will once again be real.
I think the change is permanent, Capitalism is history, we cannot go back. The War on Terrorism, declared by the terrorists, will never end until there are no more newborn babies to cry; or until America gets new leaders who have both brains and a conscience, because without both Liberty and Justice for all becomes an impossible dream, a nightmare that creates those new terrorists who must try to wake up the world.
Oh, well, birds still fly… and either we adapt or die.
