View Full Version : Any Unitarian Universalists?

12-12-2002, 01:40 PM
Or is it Universal Unitarians. Which ever one it is I am curious just what the hell it is. I saw a church the other day with this denominational designation out front. The next day I saw a bumper sticker with some crap about diverse individuals and liberal values. I figured it was a joke because the former phrase is just PC claptrap and the latter phrase is an oxymoron.

Can anyone enlighten me as to what this new "church" is really all about?

I believe it's a humanist type church that holds to the autonomy of man as the supreme absolute truth. Natualism and survival of the fittest is implied and it's been my experience that intellectual atheism is prevelant, imo.

Just to clarify.

I know there are websites out there. I am not really looking for info on what flavor of bullshit this organization represents. Here's a perfect example.

"It is obvious that the "glue" that holds congregations together is not a shared theological belief system, as it is in almost all other religious groups. "

If the "glue" that holds congregations together is not theological then calling this a religion is merely a tax dodge. It is simply a gathering of liberals.

"The 1997 survey found that the four most important factors are:
Shared values and principles: 52.1%"

What values and principles? This sounds more political and social than anything remotely religious.

"Acceptance, respect and support for each other as individuals: 42.5% "

Yeah, because other religions don't do that.

" A desire to take religious questions seriously: 14.6%"

But not to discuss or debate them in such a way as to resolve anything or offend anyone or find real truth. We'll just discuss them in a vague and general way so that nobody gets their nose out of joint.

"Commitment to social justice and public witness: 11.5%"

Public witness to what??? They are going to go out and witness that they've achieved nirvana through a total anihilation of anything relevant to an afterlife?

This is definitely a religion for anyone with a fear of commitment. If you just want to be a leaf in the winds of political correctness have we got a church for you.

What do they give a sermon on? It can't be God's word because that would be exclusive of the other religions represented under the roof of diversity. Biblical values also tend to contradict liberal ones. So just what in the world would someone "preach". Why not just be honest and call it a speech instead of a sermon? The only reason to give this crap the title of religion is for the tax exempt status.

I use to work with an x-baptist turned unitarian and he filled me in what they believed.

1. They definitely do not hold to the bible as the supreme absolute authority.

2. They believe that mans relative truth is as good as God's divine and absolute truth.

3. They accept all beliefs universally whuch is relativism holding that all truth is relative. (The clear contradiction being that they are "absolutely" sure that all truth is relative. )

4. IMO, It's a nonsense, pat you on the back, good ole boy club lacking any real substance! Their motto should be if it isn't, "If It Feels Good, Do It And We'll Still Accept You Just The Way You Are!"

That being said, what did I say that you disagree with?

They are universalists in that they figure salvation to be universal to all, no one condemned to hell. They were organized in the early 19th century.

Here's a short history:

Like I said, it does not resemble a religion in any way shape or form. It is like one gigantic declaration of Yeah whatever!

Here's another lovely little tidbit.

"We are a liberal religion growing out of the Judaic and Christian traditions. The core of our faith is our belief that each person has the right to search out, test, celebrate and witness to those truths which shall help humankind achieve a world at peace. Thus our church is composed of persons who, with all their questions and concerns, have dedicated themselves to search, celebrate and live for the ideal community of love and life. It is a very large challenge, and a wonder filled adventure."

Sorry folks but I don't want to live in a world of peace. Such an idealistic, utopian vision is anathema to the human nature. Even Jesus Himself never told us to be at peace with everyone, only to be at peace with ourselves and to love everyone.

True peace among all peoples cannot and will not ever exist and it is utter foolishness to pursue it. The fact that it is the main tenet of their beliefs tells me right off the bat that these people are infants. They are ideological boobs with no grasp of reality. I have nothing but sympathy for their foolishness and gullibility.

OTOH the people who founded it as a church were brilliant. They have completely taken advantage of the tax exempt status of religious organizations for their little endeavors. It's charming really. The liberals have found yet one more way to suckle upon the teat of the government and screw the working class.

I'm sure they would accept that too as long as you sat in a corner and didn't get in anyone's face about it. After all, they are all about accepting EVERYONE'S beliefs and that must include yours. Maybe you should pop into one of their jam sessions and put that tenet to the test. If you do please make a video tape of it and share it with me. ;D

Who gives a fuck about anything? There IS nothing new. There never is. I just recently became aware of this group of retards and I'm just sharing my opinion of, my amusement at, and my pity for these hapless bastards. BTW, my whole point was that this IS NOT a religion in even a remote sense of the word. Thanks for paying such close attention dickhead.

Lizzie

This has zero to do with who's god can do what since the UUA doesn't care enough about any particular god to be concerned with what he/she/it can or cannot do. They are simply pushing liberal values under the guise and tax exemption of a church. Aside from the abuse of tax laws I really couldn't care less about these yahoos. If you could not discern that from what I wrote then perhaps English is not your primary language and I should use simpler words.

From what I can tell, UU's are a religious organization minus the dogma. Just a bunch of people who KNOW that they don't have all the answers getting together to find common ground on what they BELIEVE to be true.

I have a hell of a lot more respect for someone who is searching for truth than someone who quotes scripture by rote and pretends to have the truth.

Wendy...actually the UU's are a quasi-religious group similar to the Wiccan or the Church of "What's Happen'n Now" that get together and play at spirituality and pat themselves on the back for being such good people. People who are searching for the "truth" must have a starting point outside themselves. Universalism, paganism and all the other ism's begin with the human ego. That's not the place to go if you are looking for truth.

Wendya,

The problem isn't that these people are honestly seeking the truth. They are seeking anything but the truth.
The truth for them is rebelliously and automatically rejected at every point presented.
I thought you knew that it's the nature of humanism to deny a universal absolute substituting in it's place a relative human autonomous truth.
Until the obvious is addressed all that will ever be discovered by them or any humanist group will be human finite comparitives and that ends in confusion and nonsense 100% of the time for the serious truth seeker.

The apostle John said, "You shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free."

Interesting isn't it, that the nations who know the truth are the free people? Many are "ever learning and never able to come to the knowledge of truth" as the apostle Paul stated.

I was in Dallas for some technical training at this time a few years ago. Even with Dallas' nothern proximity, the weather was a far site more tolorable. Although, had I been there a few weeks earlier, I would have experienced one of those 100 year floods. Timing is everything. :)

Dogma is what makes something a religion. No dogma, no religion.

I agree with your last paragraph. However, neither of your examples describe the UUs. They are not searching for the truth nor do they utilize scripture in any real or practical way. This makes your entire point moot.

No you used the right words, and yes it is about your religion being better. Perhaps before you judge the UU's you should go to one of their services or visit one of their websites.

Now I'll let you and buz get back to your judgemental tango.

I never once mentioned MY religion. I don't believe I ever even mentioned HAVING a religion to you. As far as judging them I am most certainly doing that. I am judging them based upon their proclaimed views, positions, goals and what have you. I know what those are because I went to SEVERAL of their websites and read them for myself. I have not had the opportunity to attend one of their services as yet but out of scientific curiosity and the need for a good laugh I fully intend to do so.

As for your condescending remarks about MY being judgemental are you really so stupid that you don't see the judgementalism in THOSE? Pull your head out of your ass and your nose down from the air dillweed. You are in no position to tell me who or what I may state my opinion on and if I am going to pass judgement on someone's stupidity what is that to you? Why should I give a fuck if some idiot on a forum thinks I'm being unfair or judgemental? What makes YOU so high and mighty? Is your stool free of odor?

Who the fuck took a shit in your mouth today?

If you don't want me responding to your opinion don't fucking put it out here asswipe. Stick your goddamn guitar up your ass and use the strings to castrate yourself fucker!!!!

To answer your question you have certainly told me what you believe, back on NewsMax. Don't be surprised if I fucking remember it.

Gods you're an asshole!

Oh OAG starts cussing me, but it's only smutty when I respond.

OCB is a HYPOCRITE

Don’t you just love it when they are so blatantly hypocritical? ::)

I always forget it's ok for them to cuss at us, but we heathens don't have any rights. Oh well it just proves that OCB couldn't take the heat.

I can't make any promises about no tongue if Sky is the person next to me or Suth for that matter. ;) I might pat you on the behind, but that would probably just piss off Mrs. Truelies. I don't want to do that so I'll just hug ya.

Go ahead and respond to my opinion. Calling me judgemental for having one is just plain stupid. So is this entire post of yours. It is a foul-mouthed rant in response to a post that wasn't even directed at you.

Stick your goddamn guitar up your ass and use the strings to castrate yourself fucker!!!!

As much as I'm sure you enjoy the mental image of that I think I'll pass. I have done nothing to warrant such an outburst nor your desire for the removal of my genitals. They have medication for people with your particular problem.

To answer your question you have certainly told me what you believe, back on NewsMax.
I was addressing Lonestar but since you brought it up what does that have to do with the UUA? My beliefs, with or without any religious affiliation are not the issue of this thread. If someone wishes to put them on trial they can start a thread to do so. I will answer any and all charges regarding my beliefs and why I hold them.

Don't be surprised if I fucking remember it.

After this demonstration of the limits of your intellect and/or vocabulary I shall be surprised at even a remote demonstration of cognitive activity, remembrance or otherwise.

Gods you're an asshole!

I'm surprised that you don't remember ME telling YOU that over at Newsmax. I believe that is the english translation for my german last name in fact. I'm the biggest asshole you're ever likely to meet.

Baby stick to music. I've dated muscians before that's pretty much all any of you are good for. That and an occasional shag. So yeah castration would be a bad thing for you; you'd lose one of your two talents.

You wish. That title will always be held by our beloved Scarlet O'Hara. Surely you remember her.

I am accustomed to coarse language. That is simply the way most people talk in the "circles" in which I run. I try to refrain from using it as it often demonstrate a lack of imagination, as Liz has shown us.

I apparently stepped on Liz's proverbial dick and she felt it necessary to vent her spleen. Her demonstration means nothing to me as the only thing it accomplishes is to illustrate her own lack of self-control, maturity, and class. It is especially appalling when one of the fairer sex comes down to wallow in the mud with the guys but that is an unfortunate side effect to our society's feminist concessions.

I am not so thin skinned that I can't handle childish and vulgar outbursts.

I'm sorry that my vocabulary isn't in keeping with your views of the fairer sex. I'll try harder to be the proper demure female you expect.

As for my lack of maturity and class, you've dealt with me enough in the past to know that I have plenty of both. Just don't come at me with coarse language yourself and not expect the same back. I will stand up for myself when I feel it necessary, and I could really care less what you think of my level of maturity and class.

I've never professed a talent for anything else. I do stick to music. It IS the only thing I'm good at...since I am married and can't provide anyone but my wife the occasional shag.

If she's not complaining or looking elsewhere then you know you have at least two talents.

I have no expectations from anyone. That doesn't mean that I'm not disappointed when a woman turns out to have less class or charm than she might. I just happen to love women and think that they truly are the fairer sex. When a man uses coarse, ugly language it is uncouth but it doesn't bother me. When a woman does it her beauty, charm and appeal are diminished. That is always tragic. OTOH, when a woman does it for humorous effect in a coy or shocking manner it can be cute. I guess I'm just a little old fashioned.

You are right. I don't believe the post to which you responded so profanely was addressed to you but if I have used language that was inappropriate when addressing a lady then I regret it. I really do try to tailor my posts to the addressee and watch my language when specifically addressing a woman or child. I will be more careful in the future. Of course, if I were really a gentleman I would consider that women may read those posts wherein I harshly address my male counterparts but I guess I am not that much of a gentleman. Besides, if you go back through this thread I think you will find that I only responded with "who the f***?" after someone, perhaps you, asked me a question in those terms.

Well I'm not at all old fashioned, and I refuse to be boxed into someone else's ideals of what is feminine and pleasing. If that makes me un-appealing to a man; he was probably not that appealing to me in the first place. I try not to be offensive bitch all the time, and I try to say what I have to say kindly. I fail sometimes, as you've seen, but I do try. Usually if I offend someone they probably needed to be offended. You've met the kind of people who need to be offended; they get what they deserve.

I'm also very girly-girl, but I will kick your ass if I need to. I will probably whine like crazy if I mess up my hair or break a nail while doing it, but I will kick ass. The only part of my body I don't worry about keeping pretty is my feet; I don't care about them at all. I walk around barefoot half the time. They're not pretty.

Well aside from the fact that my wife IS somewhat more old fashioned and probably less likely to give someone what they deserve your description of yourself would pretty much fit her. She has also let me have it with a blue streak that would make a sailor blush and I still think of her as a lady with quite a bit of class...most of the time.

I don't know if you read anything Lowly Servant wrote at NM but she didn't necessarily pull her punches. She just always told me that I treat people too mean and use vulgar language too much. Do you remember Onezman and Otis? Guys like that definitely deserve ever single shot they take. After a while though idiots like that just don't get that they are taking a beating and should find a different hobby and they become too pathetic to kick any more.

Like I said, I will try harder to watch my language even in a reply to a comment from you because I do respect you. We've been on the same attack against ignorant boobs and racists and abortionists and such. IRL I have no doubt that you and I would get along just great. We just wouldn't be going to church together. :)

That's true, some of the idiots I've dealt with both online and IRL usually don't know they're taking a beating.

Actually I'd go to church with you, and I would also invite you to a ritual with me. Don't worry, you don't have to be naked.

I like being naked. I prefer being naked. I almost regret having kids because I can't just be naked all of the time...when I'm home.

Well if you wanted to be naked you could be. Most of the rituals I attend take place on a 170-acre farm so you don't even have to worry about the neighbours seeing.
