My Beloved Mama is 62 years old. Every morning at 0600 she goes to the health club and walks two miles on a treadmill...at 4 mph. This morning, I gained a new perspective on just how impressive that is for a woman her age.

I went with her.

After months of bitching to my doctor about chronic fatigue and a general overall feeling of un-wellbeing, and hearing her (and my mother) bitch right back about my abstinence from anything remotely resembling physical exertion, I decided to try this new thing called 'exercise'. As I said to my mother when I met her at 0545 outside the gym, for me, getting my ass out of bed at 0500 and getting there was a workout in itself...or so I thought until I met The Bull.

Joe 'The Bull' Sandoval is about 5'8", maybe 185, but his legs look like he could pull a freight train loaded with marble without breaking a sweat. Helluva nice guy. I asked him to show me around the place. Hell, the last time I went to a gym most of this machinery hadn't even been invented. So he 'demonstrated' the treadmill...for a mile and a half. Then he showed me the leg-press ("That's good. Now do eight more."). Then he showed me the leg-curl machine ("Uh, Joe? Remember now, this is my first day, and I've pretty much been sitting on my ass for the last 10 years...") Anyway, I think I'm going to enjoy having him as a trainer, as long as he doesn't kill me. He definitely gave me the impression that he wasn't going to cut me any slack.

I already feel better (mentally at least), so I rewarded myself with a new pair of New Balance running shoes. :)

Oh, and that guy on the Bowflex commercial who says "I'm 41 and I'm in the best shape of my life!"? He can kiss my ass. :P

And yes, I'm going back tomorrow.

Congratualtions sky. You'll LOVE it. :-* No excruciating pain, no GD gain, just keep telling yourself that. Feel free to add expletives wherever, whenever necessary.

I recently got my husband to work out too because I was tired of him blaming his gut my great cooking. :D He is enjoying it too.

WTG, Sky...guess you're gonna have to come up with another motto besides..."No pain, no pain."

WTH? working out makes your food taste better? ???

This isn't one of those "snotty" health clubs that don't allow you to smoke while you're exercising, is it?

It's run by the local hospital. If they even see you with a cigarette, they shoot you on sight...for your own good, of course. ::)

Well, this being my first day, I really didn't get into any pain (I may feel differently in the morning, though). But I feel guilty about it, does that count? ;D

No. You should have been barely able to crawl away from the gym after he was through with you. ;D

Please have your trainer give you some god streches for those sore muscles. Starlaight may need to help you get out of bed in the morning.

How did we go from exercising to God? ::)

Oh, that's right. Our bodies are our temples.

I would have thought Starlight would be the reason Sky stays in bed in the morning......

Still going, but no excruciating pain yet. I'm pissed off about that. I gotta try harder to hurt myself tomorrow. 8)

Sky,

What is your routine?

Satan

I walked 2 miles, on an uphill grade at 3.5 mph, this morning. Did strength training on seven different contraptions. Not too bad for my fourth day...after years of not exercising at all. ;)

Now if I can just get used to the 'moving floor' head-rush when I get off the treadmill... ::)

Sky,

The plan is: Cardiac workout on the treadmill every morning. (About half an hour or so.) Strength training M-W-F.

I did the ST this morning just so my trainer could show me how to set up the contraptions.

Stop looking down at the 'moving floor' and you won't have that problem. ;D

I figured that much out pretty quickly. ;)

It's still having a little effect on my equilibrium, though it is diminishing. Y'know...the high's never as good as the first time. ;D

I've told everybody I know, so that if I quit, I'll get a good solid ass-kicking for boring them for nothing. ;D

Natas, I am very proud of you. You don't bore any of us with your little installments. In fact it is beginning to inspire me to get on my 'moving floor' machine in the other room. ;D

Are you working streches into your routine? When you really get into the weights, the streches will definately help with muscle pain.

Yes, I am, and I've always been pretty limber anyway. I started doing yoga in the 70s (didn't everybody?). When I was in my early 20s, I used to free-climb at 2 and 300 feet, and I could throw my legs up over my head hanging on by my fingertips. God, that seems like light-years ago. ::)
