Okay, this question is mainly for Wendy but open for any other doggie owners... it's pretty boring though. ::)

Buddy, our Aussie Shep went AWOL this morning for three hours in the long grass around the lake.

(((this is because our nine year old *saved* hundreds of toad eggs out of our swimming pool as the result of their annual mating thing in our pool and every mornng exits the back gate to free the mature tadpoles)))

Buddy came home muddy and flicking his paws and when I checked him out he was infested with ticks.

One flea and tick bath, a home shave, and three hours later, we got 75+ ticks off this guy.

We took him to our vet and all she did was dip him and pluck off two more ticks...plus sell us Frontline Plus.

Okay so doesn't he need an antibiotic or something?

How did he get infested so quickly or maybe we should do our yard?

What do you use for your dogs, assuming they go outdoors? I'm freaked, considering I use Hartz flea and Tick once a month and bathe him every week.

Are you getting a lot of rain?

Sam's had a lot of problems with ticks this year...but I check him out before he's allowed back in the house. He's light colored so they're easier to spot. Anytime your dog runs through weeds, bushes or tall grasses...you're going to have to check for ticks.

Don't worry about an antibiotic. He should be ok on his own. Do you have lyme disease in the area? Does he get a lyme vaccination yearly?

You could probably treat the area...but I don't know what with...and it would only last for a short period of time.

Use the frontline...it's good stuff. The ticks will eventually drop off and die. Until the ticks diminish, you're just going to have to check him out after he romps in the grasses. That's a prime spot for ticks.

Sam's

I have a Sam as well, but he's a yellow and white kitty. He's also quite stupid. He almost put his own eye out the other day when he ran into a broom with bent straws.

Eek, yes tons of rain and we border the lake. The place is like a bog. Ticks thrive in rain? Ees.

It sounds like we need to check him at least once a day, because our half acre is all grass.

Don't know about lyme, he's due for his vaccinations and I'll ask.

Thanks, I guess I just felt like that with all those bites he was going to get sick. :P Buddy's a blonde Aussie, so if we keep him trimmed, we can keep an eye on it.

-Heading to Home Depot to check out any yard treatments.

Thanks again Wendy. :)

Buddy popped his eye out chasing a ball. The kids called him Popeye.

The eyeball is okay after re-insertion and a month with a satellite dish thingie around his neck.

Oh the poor puppy! What kind of dog is he?

Speaking of the satellite dish, Sam had one last year after a bigger cat whooped his ass, I had them fix him at the same time. Poor thing, goes to sleep, wakes up with a plastic drain in his side, a big plastic thing around his head and no balls.

You might also want to consider a local spray...for Buddy. Zodiac makes one that repels fleas, ticks and mosquitos. I started using it after Sam would come back inside with a dozen mosquito bites.

I think liquid sevin probably kills ticks.

Gracias. Too bad I can't just spray the kids for good measure.

Confederate Girl,

I dunno if Australian Sheperd is a real breed or just a wannabe. I fell in love with Buddy for his good intentions and sunny nature despite his somewhat dim intellect. We get on great. ;D

Here's a pick of his colouration:

Makes me want to move to the country and get a couple of dogs myself.

I could sell my house and get a doublewide. Anybody want to help me build a deck? Around here, you ain't nothin' if you ain't got a deck on your doublewide.
