I have many many cassettes and albums, Id like to transfer onto CD before the tape degrades, or cartridges become unavailable for turntables, or both. I now nothing about the process, other than Ive seen a Sony CD recorder which lets you transfer other media, including other CD's onto CD.

Ive also been told thers a method using a PC, provided its equipped with a CD burner, but is this a different type of CD medium than those used in commercially recorded CD,'s.

The Sony deck would be optimum to record TO as I have 3 cassette decks and a turntable, all run through an equalizer, but the Sony Deck is $300..... .Its advertised as having software to remove the hisses, skips, and rough spots...

Whats the best way...even if it costs more? at this time.

I got the 120 Gig hard drive with the fire wire. Unfortunately, I haven't figured out what a fire wire is yet. :)

If you plug a tape deck or record player into your PC's sound input-you can record each song as a wave track using various sound recording software out there. You can then burn these .wav tracks to a CD.

That's the simple overview of what you'd need to do. Basically to restate:

A) hook player to audio input of computer
B) Get software to make audio files (mp3 would be best bet) of input
C) Burn mp3s or other audio file onto CD.

Thanks guys,

it seems as if each of you avoided the Sony recorder , probably in view of the expense as compared to the PC alternative....

or was it the scrubiing aspect of the PC software, perhpas unobtainable on a non-PC approach?

...it seems as if each of you avoided the Sony recorder , probably in view of the expense as compared to the PC alternative....If the Sony recorder can asociate the pauses between songs as tracks on the CD-then go for it (it would be the easiest approach). My method would give each song it's own track on the CD.

Well I ended up buyin a SONY..I was in Sears on a different mission, when, while wandering past electronics spotted one...a Sony RCD W50C 5 disc changer and CD recorder, with something called bit mapping....

whats that??? Its original MSRP was $349., it was selling on sale for $249...and since it was the floor model, the guy let me have it for $ 199.....It has 2 input jacks for accepting material (analog) from other sources along with digital input plugs.......

so now begins the task..I guess Ill see how this works with some trial n error on CD-RWs before finalizing a good copy onto CD-R Audio .....

I hope I dont have to replace this with a more expensive whistles n bells one a year from now for the same bread.
