Some films spawn sequels or even a third edition by which time the original content has been altered beyond recognition in order for the suits to make a few more shekels . Some however emerge as true franchises, with sequels either yearly or a decade or more later. Alien, Star Wars, Harry Potter, The Ring Series and The Terminator.
The original Terminator, first launched in 1984 became an instant cult classic, followed by its sequel in 1992 Terminator Judgement Day. This past week Terminator , Rise of the Machines premiered, adding one more chapter to this cult classic and setting the table for more to come..
Any fans of this franchise and the concepts underlying the storyline?

I'm glad Cameron didn't screw up the first two; I think man won't be able to build a machine capable of that level of performance for hundreds of years, if ever. Machines always break; I'm looking forward to T4. :)

I admit, Im one of the original cultees of this film and the concept undelying the plot..I found the music and the theme song has haunted me for years .......at intervals and for no reason....
I remember Sara Connor's line from T2 in the desert scene when the friendly Terminator and John Connor were reparing a vehicle:
" I knew this thing, this machine would never leave him, no matter what, it would protect him, like no flesh n blood would ever....."
or words to that effect
I agree with your premise that such machines on theat level may never exist, but thats what they thought in T2, when they destroyed the arm and the chip.....or so they thought.....
T4 should rock.....
Im also lookin forward to the final installment of the Ring series this Dec.......
other than these films, I rarely go to the cinema

Ya know, none of it would be possible without time-travel; I bet we'll build a worthy machine long before we can move through time. ;D

We are well on our way to creating a hybrid. We have mechanical limbs, hearts, etc. The problem will lie in either the creation or transferring of consciousness.
I agree, time travel is way beyond our present day knowledge and abilities. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but I think it is theoretically impossible according to what we know about the laws of physics.

Actually time travel is in theory possible as a corollary of the 'multiple universes' theory that some physicists hold to. Thing is that the past you travel to would not be the one you were born into (that past is fixed and cannot be altered). Rather you would end up in a 1950 or 1850 or whatever where your appearance was an intergral part of the events that made the future of that timeline.

I tend to enjoy the time-travel stuff despite knowing that it is nothing but pure fiction. One can look at the past...one can even see into the future (Astrology). One can even be cryogenically suspended and go into the future in what appears to be a short time...however, going back in time is impossible. What's done is done. Written history can be edited....but REAL history cannot.
I saw a news article just the other day. It claimed that 'machines taking over the world' was going to happen sooner than we think.
Many of us have pondered that before. This is not so much fresh news. It was even depicted in old books and black/white movies.
One of the advantages of Science Fiction, is that many bases of potential disaster are already well covered, and problems can be averted long before they begin.

I don't expect as much from a movie as most people seem to. If I'm looking for culture, art, or an underlying moral message, I'll sit down and read a book!!
If the movie entertains me then I couldn't care less if it's plot, or concept is anywhere near it's preceeding titles.
When I go to a movie, the eye candy had just better be good enough to make up for the lack of substance.

Guido,
The initial postage called for speculation on the underlying premise; not just cheesecake and moral ramifications. ;D

In mentioning franchises, I deliberately failed to include the Phantasm trilogy begun in the 1980's, as with time and tide, its follow-ons became schlocky and much less credible than the original...which IMO had some of the eeriest and haunting scenes in memory, esp the flashbacks, in particular The Tall Man:

The 3rd movie is rather weak compared to the first two, IMHO. too much reliance on computer graphics and not much thought given to a coherent story line.
