View Full Version : Aliens?

Let's see where this goes:
Suppose an alien spacecraft lands on the White House lawn tomorrow. Would that render Christianity moot? Or would those aliens be heathens (or something along those lines)?
Shoot.

John Ashcroft would immediately run out and ask them if they believed in God.
They'd better look like us because God made "man"in His image.

It could only render any religion moot for those of little faith.

I doubt it would change much.
Someone would say that "God works in mysterious ways" - and tell us we should not question it.
Which brings me to ponder - - - are there any Christian aliens?

Now there's a question...what if the aliens appeared telling the same story of the same God and the same religion?
Would this convince non-believers here?
More likely they'd be attacked at once as Heathens by the Christians, Jews, and Muslims for daring to hijack the One True God. They'd be considered extremely dangerous by the very ones they would most validate. :)

I would love aliens landing in DC...JUst to see the faces of our leaders....priceless!!!

It wouldn't change my belief in God in any way. I don't really think that ONE book of a few thousand pages can tell us everything there is possibly to know. <<shrug>>

Interesting...
I think if Buzz were around, he would say these aliens were the work of the devil. And I would imagine most far-right fundies would take that line because the mere existance of such beings pretty much invalidates the early books of the bible.
The sad reprecussion is those idiots might be the ones that land us in the first interstellar war. (Probably a short one too, as aliens landing HERE would undoubtably have a huge tech advantage.)
Christians compartmentalize far more than this speculation on a daily basis; so no, I doubt it would render christianity moot. (For some, yes.)
And I do agree with Lucy, the look on our leader's faces would be absolutely priceless. (Like..HOLY SH*T, NOW WHAT!)

Doesn't invalidate anything....It's always been my position that if aliens exist they're probably the angels written about....bad and good.

I have no idea if this is true but I heard that there is a canon or teaching of the Catholic Church that deals with the subject of aliens. The major idea is conversion of any intelligent/sentient race which we encounter. No surprise there. ;D

Do demons and angels really exist?
What about souls? Do we have a soul? Or are we all just a makeup of cells and fluids and bones? Does it all end when brain activity ceases to happen?

Yes.. please refer to the "best way to dispose of a body" thread.
I don't know why anyone would believe that aliens landing here would affect Christianity or any other religion. I don't recall any of the books of the Bible saying there weren't any aliens anywhere else.
If they did have a belief in a Creator it would be interesting. If they had an alternate explanation for how all of this came about and it was as reasonable or more reasonable than creation or BB theories that would be even more interesting. THEN their landing here might affect religions everywhere.

I think it would be quite egotistical and narrow minded of us to assume we are the only life out there.
Perhaps other beings have also created a God to worship, as some humans have.

No more so than to assume there is no God higher than us.

Well you can perhaps any number of scenarios.........don't mean shit.. ;D

My beliefs have little to do with ego..
In truth.. I think that to believe we have a special being looking out for us and if we behave ourselves we will remain devine forever more in a special lil spot called heaven is quite mislead.. and perhaps borders on ego and fear of the unknown..
My belief (worm food) is perhaps a wee bit more disturbing.
Furthermore.. I think many people want to believe aliens do not exist because we , ourselves , cannot travel fast enough and lack the technology to explore other solar systems. What is that but ego, to assume that because WE cannot, others cannot either?
There must be other life out there, how do you explain NorNec?

Funny, except you got it all wrong.
If there are alien species "out there" and they made themselves know to us, they would be so technologically advanced that they look at us just the way we look at ants in an anthill.
We (and most likely our Gods) would be insignificant to them. An idle curiosity if anything at all. Something to poke with sticks to see how we would react. And then laugh at our reaction.
Kind of like how we have treated the lesser creatures throughout our history.
You'll get a smite from NorBabe for that remark I'm sure. ::)
I'm worried? ;D

Pony, relative to you last statement, I always have to laugh when people say, as most of them do, that aliens would be thousands of years more advanced than we are to be able to get here. I look at the western world about 100 years ago and compare technology then to now. Then it was almost nonexistant, certainly relative to today. All it would take would be a small bit of serendipity and we too would have the ability to travel to other worlds easily. Scientific and technological advancements have far more often resulted from serendipity than they have resulted from planned activity. (In fact, DuPont years ago would let their scientists research just about any subject they wanted to, as long as they kept really good lab records. Their scientists didn't often find the answers they were looking for, but they did often stumble onto really valuable discoveries they weren't looking for.) Consider that the personal digital computer came into its own just about 25 years ago, and that the computer company above all computer companies, IBM, wasn't in the least bit interested. Were they ever wrong, and they had to scurry to try to catch up, and didn't. (Bill Gates formed his own company, Microsoft, when IBM showed no significant interest in the software he was proposing to create. IBM could have owned MS DOS at a very low price at the time.) In my opinion, knowing a bit about history, aliens landing here might well be just a tad ahead of us in time. After all, all peoples on earth have had about the same amount of time to learn and progress. Some are completely primitive to this day, and others like ourselves are very advanced, compatatively, indeed. It is not so much a matter of time as it is of good fortune and free enterprise, when the inventors will make the money on new inventions, rather than cronies of the king.

Of course, back to the original question, there is no doubt in my mind that if aliens did in fact land on the Whitehouse lawn, that the first thing that would happen is that first the Secret Service personnel and then military personnel would attempt to shoot the shit out of them.
Let's see where this goes:
Suppose an alien spacecraft lands on the White House lawn tomorrow. Would that render Christianity moot? Or would those aliens be heathens (or something along those lines)?

Tell me about it. They're probably outside drinking cheap booze and watching their kids set themselves on fire.

I am recalling the old "Twilight Zone" show where these tall aliens come to earth in peace and only wish to serve man. They even have a book with the title on it. After transporting several people to visit their "planet of paradise"... a woman discovers that their book entitled "How to best serve man"............is a cookbook. ;D
I'm recalling a short story called The Edict of the Shreen, if I remember correctly. The Shreen are a species entirely advanced of our own who put up a barrier to prevent humans from venturing beyond the bounds of our solar system. The humans make many attempts to break through this barrier. Finally a human Captain and aide or something venture aboard the Shreen mothership to negotiate. It concludes with the aide describing the Shreen as majestic beings of obvious power, truly the masters of the universe. As the Captain reaches the threshold of the doorway into their chamber they inquire who approaches. He struts into the room and demands, "Who wants to know?"
I like what that has to say about human spirit. OTOH it represents exactly why humans have such difficulty with accepting the edicts of any being up to and including God. Humans simply don't like being told what they can and cannot do. People who perceive God as doing that resent Him. If aliens came here all full of their superiority and tried to push humans around they would find an immediate, violent and concerted resistance from all humanity.

many here wouldn't be convinced if Jesus himself turned their computers into wine.
