WASHINGTON - The US Postal Service has unveiled their 2001 commemorative stamp program, presented as “A New Century of Stamps” with an assortment of colorful, educational stamps that has “something for everyone.” The USPS revealed their 2001 collection Monday live on C-SPAN from the Smithsonian Institution's National Postal Museum, a first for the US Postal Service.

If you don't like it...don't buy it. The "government" did not pay to have that stamp printed. In case you didn't know, the USPS is not run by the government anymore (not that you could tell).

I guess you'll really be pissed when you find out they printed one THIS year as well.

It's regulated by the board of governors...which are people chosen by congress. The post office only receives federal funds in limited situations...like last year for clean up of anthrax contaminated buildings and machines to "clean" the mail. They receive funds for free mailings..like the military postage free service and the free stuff for the blind and of course, the 'free" political mailings from your congressmen and senators. As for the first class stamps you buy, they are subsidized by the mass mailers. The postal service wouldn't survive without bulk rate mail. Do you really think they could send a letter from Atlanta to Alaska for 37cents? ;)

Honey, I've read the Bible and the Qur'an. If you read the OT as a literal instruction book, you are going to run into the same problems you see in the Qur'an. It really can't be compared to the Bible. It's more of a history book. Muslims are supposed to submit to the will of God..not to the will of whateverthefuck Muhammed did 500 years ago.

The real problem with Islam and Christianity is, there is no earthly universal leader of either group (outside of the Catholic Church of course). There is no 'the buck stops here' type person who can define doctrine. Both groups are subject to the fundamentalist mindset and define scripture to fit their individual causes.

Well, I don't accept that there IS a (living) chosen leader of any religion today.

A lot of people after September 11th demanded a statement from the Muslims in regard to terrorism. They wanted a denouncement...but what they got was a bunch of differing opinions. Just as Pat Robertson and Jerry Falwell do NOT represent all Christians, there is NO universal Muslim leader.

That is the point. People WANT a quick and simple answer but it doesn't exist.

Bingo! The terrorists are the most devout who follow the closest to the example of their prophet and to his commandments as well as those of his desciples who followed him. After the death of Muhammed many Muslims wanted out, but the close desciples of Muhammed as well as his relatives forced them to remain Muslim or die. According to Islamic law, one you become a Muslim you remain for life or you die as a heretic. During the dark ages of the inquisitions Roman Catholicism had this same rule. There were only very rare occasions where Jews were allowed to marry pagans. Rape was not sanctioned by Israeli conquerors and according to history not a practice.

The OT conquests by the Jews has a lot to do with whether Jehovah is really the supreme god of the universe and if the Bible is his book. The orders to conquer were given to a specific nation for Jehovah to establish his name and his authority over the false pagan gods of his creation. AS a matter of fact,, My Secind Marriage,..was to a Young woman who had MUSLIM Parents. She left Afghanistan at the age of fiteen back in the 1970's, when they became aware of the Soviet threat.

When these "peaceful" American Muslims eventually find America's majority to be Muslim and the devout take over the leadership of the nation as they have done in about 30 nations so far, they will be taught the fundamentals of the book and many of them will then be willing to also strap explosives to themselves for the cause of the Islamic god Allah and for the advancement of Islam to become what it's suppose to become, i.e. conquerer of the entire planet.

The problem with Islam is they have no recognized universal leader, if they did and they attacked the USA than I would say they are a violent religion. What they have is a book that is interrupted differently by different people to suit their needs. I find it real hard to say as a whole group Islam is a violent religion. The etymological root of islam (s-l-m) is associated with the ideas of peace (salaam) and well-being (salaama), and the implication in a religious context is that a person who submits his or her will completely to the worship of the one God, Allah, finds peace, safety, and salvation. Muslims commonly speak of Islam as “the religion of peace.”

Wouldn't you have to agree that Congress does in fact control it by appointing it's managers? It is not privately owned. Yes or no? The government mandates that it exist. It cannot cease to exist without government approval. The government funds what it cannot earn. In reality it is, imo, a government entity.

Congress does not appoint postal managers.

It IS owned by the federal government but it operates as a fee for service organization. The only time it receives money from the fed is when they MANDATE that the post office must deliver "free" mailings. The so-called free mailings are, of course, not free at all but taxpayer subsidized. This was agreed to by congress duiring reorganization. They wanted the free mailings to continue..the unions told congress they would have to foot the bill.


The post office is one of the few constitutionally authorized services of the government. Think about that next time you want to gripe about the post office. It used to be totally controlled by congress until the postal reorganization act. The USPS was reformed to KEEP the government from using it for the political benefit of congressmen. The operational authority of the USPS does not come from congress. They cannot force the post office to print or not print any particular stamp. They have NO say in it whatsoever.

It cannot cease to exist without government approval. The government funds what it cannot earn. In reality it is, imo, a government entity.

Well, Wendy you said the USPS was regulated by people chosen by Congress. You said it was owned by the government.

Buzz, it is NOT controlled by congress. That was the whole point of this lame butt thread. Congress has no authority over the post office. It was changed to make sure congress COULD NOT interfere with the operations of the post office. Congress can't order them to print a stamp or to not print a stamp. It's out of their hands. All they can do is refuse to fund the political mailings and free mailings in which case the post office is under no obligation to deliver it.
