If so, what did you do with the old cabinets?

If you have friends or neighbors with garages, they work really well above the work bench. I'd let some people know you have them...they may take them off your hands.

I will burn the house down before I EVER remodel the kitchen again.

I remodeled my Mom's house over the holidays. The kitchen cabinets are maple, built-in-place in 1949. I took the doors off, sanded everything down - 60 grit to take off the old varnish, then 120, then 180 grit until they were smooth as a baby's ass. White primer, then two coats of high-gloss exterior latex.

I left the doors off of this cabinet that faces the entrance door from the dining room, and and painted the back wall the same color as the DR to 'tie the rooms together'.

I wanted to keep the ca. 1949 copper hardware, too, but it had 50 years of grease and grime built up on it (not my Mom's - they just bought the house). So while I had the doors off, I dropped the hinges and knobs in a large bowl and added a cup of ammonia and about a half-gallon of hot water. With a little coaxing from an old toothbrush in the hinge-joints, they came out looking like this:

I never throw out anything that can be refinished. ;D 8)

You did the right thing. You can't do this with laminates. ;)

Good for you. Really, some of the old hardware is much more interesting than the new anyway. And if it's still functional................
You did a fine job on your mom's kitchen. It looks gorgeous now. I don't think I myself would have gone through so much work. I despise sanding and I hate painting even more.
But I'm wonderful outdoors. If she ever wants a garden or yard remodel.................. ;D

I'll remodel your kitchen if you'll come rake up all this goddamned pine straw. ;D
I like Annie's idea about using them in the garage/basement workshop.

Why you're a regular Ty Pennington. ;)

Ty Pennington isn't even Ty Pennington. They have the real carpenters doing the work behind the cameras while he makes suck face at America. ;)

:o :o
Bite your tongue!
They are currently building a house in Tampa for the blinded sole survivor of a November Radio Shack shooting, so of course, the local news stations have been non-stop covering the "action." Ty has been building his fine little ass off all week. Yesterday, he was working on some special "thing" all day...mostly by himself, I might add. Don't knock Ty, man. He is a miracle working hottie... ;D

I'm not denying his aesthetic appeal, he is, after all, a model. I'm just saying that on his shows, the majority of the work is done by other people, off screen. ;)

Yeah, well...he is fine. So I let it slide. :P

LOL, ok. :)
Good job, Sky. Looks great.
Our cabinets are wood, but the problem is they aren't indivindual cabinet at all - it is ONE 10 foot long cabinet, with doors on it, to look like individuals. There aren't even shelves because they aren't "walls" inside. Everything gets lost. Same with the uppers - one gigantic cabinet.
I think a garage is about all they are good for.
Now I need to move some books so we can afford to do this.
Yeah, well...he is fine. So I let it slide. :P
I'm pretty sure he's a homo.

I used to love that show but frankly I can not STAND all the screaming he does! It grates on my nerves.
Well, if you're talking about Extreme Home Makeover, I only ever watched one episode, because it was a local house.
But, I used to watch Trading Spaces before it got popular. But, once everybody started watching they started doing this weird crap like glueing hay to walls and doing the exact one thing the homeowner said they would hate, just for ratings and then it got dull.
Homeowner: Please, do ANYthing, but do NOT paint my walls brown, I HATE brown.
Hilda: We're painting this room and all its contents varying shades of brown
homeowner's friend: Please, not brown, she hates it
Hilda: <indignant, self-righteous bitch smirk> I am the AR-TEEST, I will do MY design, you will just shut up and work like dog.
Me: Screw this <click>

Trading Spaces
Never liked that show.
Extreme makeover always has that happy, feel-good story that makes woosy cry-babies like myself tune in every episode just so I can see the mansion of a house that they build for a gang-shooting victim or something. It makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside...<sniff> :)

Didn't Sky do a beautiful job on that kitchen?
If you look closely, you'll notice that his mom has a dishwasher.... ;D
