Okay, I keep a bamboo plant...and I just had to chuck one of the stalks because it was yellow. I pulled out the stalk and I swear to God, the most foul smelling stink came off that thing. I instantly chucked the thing out the door. the other stalks look fine, but what the hell did I encounter???
Well I don;t know, but I hope you didn't literally chuck it out the door. :) That stuff is tenacious and fast. Your house will be covered in bamboo by the morning. ;D

Rot.
Overwatering.. maybe in a spot.
Yellow branches in any plant are indicitive of over watering.. and the stink goes hand in hand with rot.
If it continues to turn yellow branch by branch.. take it out of the pot.. shake as much ground off the roots as you can and repot in fresh earth. It's hard to save a plant from rot.. but you maybe can.
Sounds like only one area is overwatered.

Jeny, I did quite literally chuck that particular stalk out the door. Considering it's only 32 out, I don't think I have to worry about being overrun with bamboo.

Famous last words. ;D You should burn the whole damn thing, rotten stalk and all. ;)

Forget that, that bamboo crap will grow out of control under any cirumstance. I bet you could even grow it up there in the tundra! ;D

As a matter of fact..
I have a "hedge" (please read as goddamed invasive pain in my ass) that is designed as a privacy fence on the end of my porch. It's a relative of bamboo.. and is indeed.. invasive.
If I was you I would move now while you still can.
Bamboo is in the grass family.

Plant mint over it. A nuclear blast won't kill mint.

I have mint all over my yard where it has been spreading like crazy every since everything else in the herb bed and the yard died. You can't kill mint. It's one scary little plant.

Mint is evil. Especially spearmint. It will take over ANYTHING.
And seriously, bamboo would be an improvemet over what i currently have in my yard....

Sparky, I grow my bamboo in water only, and it has never turned yellow. What are you growing it in?

Just water and some rocks.
Since I got rid of the nasty, evil, smelly stalk, everything is fine with the remaining. I think the problem was that I was over-watering. I'm kinda experimenting right now on the right ammount to actually water them.
But what's remaining is doing fine

LOL! Cool! Make sure the water level doesn't exceed the proper level in order not to rot out the stalk. So, I guess that was your problem, huh? I think I'll add some stones to mine too! :)
BTW, mine never gets direct sunlight. It sits in a side windowsill, and seems to like cool rather than hot.

If you hate your neighbor, plant bamboo right next to their property line. ;D
I've got bamboo out in the yard. I've got a fairly large patch of it in a contained area where it can't spread out and I also have two large pots of black bamboo that are set on a bed of 8" of rock (to prevent escape). It is extremely invasive and damned near impossible to kill but it is a great "filler" for any part of the yard that you don't want to spend a lot of time maintaining. Mint is evil and should only be grown in pots.

If you live in a warm climate, never...never plant a trumpet vine. I planted one about 15 years ago and it's everywhere. It will sucker out 20 feet from the original plant. It's like Kudzu....once you've got it, it's impossible to remove without a nuclear blast.

Heck, mint is so evil that you have to put it in a pot, away from all forms of grass. It will spread, even from a pot.
