I was just watering my flower boxes on the back porch when I noticed something curious. TWELVE squirrels. Yes, TWELVE, that I could see, in my not-that-big backyard. They were fightng with eachother and being very loud, etc.. What the heck??

We always had a few, we have fruit trees, they eat the fruit. No big deal. But TWELVE?? Anyone ever encounter this before? Do we need to do something before we try to sell the house? What I mean to ask is, are squirrels considered "pests?"

So odd...why on Earth would so many congregate in one place, you would think there wouldn't be enough food to keep them. There's an owl family living in the trees in our neighbors yard and some hawks that live in some trees up the hill. One would think that would maintain some kind of balance. ??? We don;t live in the "city" or anything, but this is hardly rural, I can;t belive I have this many squirrels in my yard. :-\

I don't consider them pests. Unless they are causing some type of damage? I see at least 10 each day running about my yard. What kind of trees do you have in your yard? We have huge oaks that drop trillions of acorns so I know why the squirrels are there.

I know someone who greased up his fence with KY to try to keep the squirrels out of his yard. LOL. Didn't work, but you've got to admire the effort.

LOL!!! I don;t know if they;re a problem. They don;t cause damage as far as I'm aware. Our fruit trees bear far too much fruit for us to eat anyway, they do "clean up" But when we show the house, some people might be turned off, do you think? I was just wondering if I should do something.

I think they're cute. I guess a birdfeeder is out of the question, though. ;D

Beats me. I don't think anyone will be too worried about squirrels...unless, of course, they want to put up bird feeders.

Gotta use a petroleum-based lubricant. KY (water-based) will just wash off at the first rain :)

Squirrel stew.

A couple of hats.

Some tails to fly from your radio antenna.

Take advantage of the situation.

We get tons of squirrels here, but then again, we have squirrel feeders on our trees ;) We do have a lot of what we call curly-tailed lizards. They are quite large, and we've got several generations (at least 4) in our backyard. They like to burrow under the mulch-but they are fun to watch, and we've got no bug problems.

I guess a birdfeeder is out of the question, though. ;D
That would be a big yes. They are tricky, and will find many ways to crawl up on to the feeders.

Well they are rodents & their bite carries rabies. Should it turn out that they are members of one of about a dozen 'endangered' squirrel species in Cali they could end up as your legally pampered pensioners for the rest of eternity. before you have a chance to find something like that out I would hire a Squirrel Hitman immediately. BTW they are good eating properly prepared.

I have never heard this before. Are you making it up?

They kill the rat bastards out here every couple of years because they carry Bubonic Plague...yes, indeed, you read that right. Bubonic plague.

Well, more accurately, the fleas on them carry Bubonic Plague, but they are the carriers of the fleas that carry the Bubonic Plague.

This has been an unpaid for public service announcement.

Nuh-uh. It ain't done it. Me loves squirrel, deep fried. 'Course, I'd only shoot 'em and eat 'em during the cold months. The rest of the year, they's nasty.

I have never heard this before. Are you making it up?Do I ever make stuff up without a smiley? :) But, I'm not in this case. There was a scientific paper a few years back that directly linked eating squirrel brains in Tennessee to brain conditions similar to encephalitis (swelling of the brain)

This one goes as far as to say it's a possible link between brains and Human mad-cow disease...

I have one squirrel proof feeder:

http://www.yankeeflipper.com/droll/index.cfm

I have been known to occasionally let the charge run down and allow the squirrels to raid the feeder for a week or two....before charging it back up...just for the entertainment value. ;)

All the other feeders are fair game.

If it's microscopic, how would anyone know if they had eaten one or not....I googled it and my computer suffered a mini-crash.....
